Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I put on the new Metallica album for last night's quick ride with the intent of playing it straight through, top to bottom, and returning home once it finished. I don't think I got tired one bit.

Usually, if I'm listening to anything, it's probably an NPR podcast like Car Talk or Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Musically, I get hyped up every time with stuff from the anime Initial D; here's one of the better tracks. I can't listen to it while I'm in the car, though -- it just makes me hyper.

NIN is the original, and IMO it's better than Cash's cover... regardless... this is the other 'hurt' cycling vid I've seen - not too shabby:

Hurt

A more recent version of Trent performing hurt: TR - NIN - Hurt

wow! i think you're the only other person besides me who likes NIN version better than johnny cash's. and i was a big fan of cash's 'american' series of albums. my favorite cover of his was his rendition of Nick Cave's 'the mercy seat'

With my 4 year old daughter, it's The Sound of Music. One morning I was out on the road for 2 hours hearing "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" in my head on an endless loop. I was seriously considering taking off my helmet and riding into a tree.

For me, it varies. But a couple of standards for me:

For grinding out long, flat miles, it's Herbie Hancock's Chameleon.

For a tough climb, it's an old live drum duet with Chester Thompson and Phil Collins.

Not only is it better, but I don't think Cash ever did heroin. Plenty of other drugs but probably not heroin. Trent? Yes, definitely. Probably a couple of hours before the song was recorded. Adds a bit more perspective and makes a bit more...real.

NIN is awesome. They, along with RATM, occupy a good portion of the playlist entitled "Pain Inducing" on my iPod.

And, another great song. "Ramblin' Man" by Mr. Waylon Jennings.

I am a music freak, I listen to it all the time, but there is no way I will listen to music when riding on the road. There are too many people not paying attention to their driving. I am determined to remain more alert to what's going on around me than everybody else does. I want to hear all cars coming up behind me. I always watch them in my mirror to make sure they are giving me sufficient room (I don't want to be the unfortunate result of some moron texting while driving). No headphones for me.

Man, ... no DnB , no techno, no heavy metal.

Tsk tsk, how can you get pumped up with country music. Country folk out here, isn't that right?

I mean, I can clearly understand classical when you go out for the ride and the scenery... but man, you guys are like old timers, sheesh.
