Hello from San Diego (UTC)
someone pointed me to this forum from the road cycling section.
Just wanted to say hi. i've been commuting by bike for about 4 weeks now 3-4 days a week...car just broke down so it'll be upped to 5 days a week now lol. Anyhow, does anyone here commute up genesee from Miramar Rd/La Jolla Village Drive to N. Torrey Pines Road? if you do, how the heck do you manage to get up that ginormous hill right before the genesee/torrey pines intersection??

What's the largest cog in your rear gearing? If it's less than 30T, I suggest upgrading to a granny gear of 34Teeth. That's the largest bail out gear that's currently available.
I road that hill once and I was running a 42 Teeth front chainring and a 34T rear cog. It was slow going up, but I wasn't hurting when I finally completed it.

Are you sure that is the only way? I was going from Genesee to Campus Point to Voigt through the UCSD campus... from there it depends on which way you need to go on Torrey Pines.
Seems to me that uphill grind on Genessee is just asking for trouble... If you are near 5 and Genessee, check out this alternative on to campus for a different route.

Good luck

i do not recommend taking genese with that 5 freeway connector. Cut across UCSD by the way of Regents, then you can you make it to the other side of Genese/North Torrey Pines

I go Governor -> Genesee -> Nobel -> Torrey Pines (into La Jolla)
I think I know the hill you're talking about. It's not easy, but not that hard either. Genesee -> Governor is better
