After a horrible experience of underwear constricting the snake, I decided that there may actually be a reason for bicycling clothing. The thing is, I dont want to be seen in spandex. I dont have an image problem, I just dont want people to go blind.

Now I dont some reading and it appears that I can perserve people eyes by wearing the bicycle clothing underneath street clothes, is this true? If so, what do you all recommend?

You could also buy mountain biking cycling shorts. They have the padding like regular cycling shorts but are baggy. Check out Fox Racing's mid-ranger shorts.

Wearing the lycra/spandex shorts under longer pants works just fine, it's what I do in the winter when it's cold. The rest of the time I wear a "baggy short", these look like regular shorts but have an inner chamois/bike short built into them. Cannondale and Zoic are two brands that I have used and are happy with, but try to find them on sale, they are expensive at full retail.

Actually, if you ride on streets in traffic, you DO want to blind people. So you are seen. Less accidents. I always wear bright green, orange, etc.

Aside from a helmet, the only cycling-specific garb I wear is a bright yellow/green, fluorescent jersey. And then, and only then, if I'll be riding on busy roadways.

I don't want to look like an insect.

I dont mean blinding people with bright colors. I wear bright colors on and off the bike.

I mean blinding people with my body in spandex.

Lycra/Spandex shorts under baggy shorts are the best. Board shorts are not too baggy, are tough and dry quickly. I am not a fan of MTB shorts.

Spandex- lycra or any other form of cycling specific clothing works- Especially on comfort. And let your inhibitions go. Not many riders look that bad in Riding clothes. And if you do- who cares?

My psychotic former neighbor wore lycra-spandex bicycling clothes all the time. Even in the dead of winter here in northern Vermont. She was hideously ugly. Viewed from the back - it looked like someone had poured several tubs of cottage-cheese down her backside & legs. From the front it looked like she had a truck tire around the mid-section and a couple of traffic cones. And all her teeth were wired into place with stainless-steel. And she had a beard. Her personality matched her appearance. She was Mrs. Jaws meets the Bride of Frankenstein.

I can't ever look at lycra-spandex the same way again.

You are not forced to wear lycra- there are alternatives.

Regular shorts over bike shorts. No problem. I do this all the time and it does work to keep the boys organized.
