Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ridiculous post

Lately, the pics on weightweenies and others seem to be skewing to saddle-to-bar drops that look almost unrideable.

Here is one example. Got any others?

That's only about 7 inches. I know people who ride that. It's called flexibility and core strength.

In some cases, yes. In others it's called bad fit.

Not so much of an extreme drop, but it's stretched out with a long stem:

By the way, that's Andrea Tafi's bike. And here's another:

You can't really judge a picture of a bike without the rider.

The guy that fitted me (ex Olympian cyclist) said to buy a size down to both cut weight and to increase how much drop you can acheive. Also he prefers to run a 130 stem so it can drop even further.

As you say, you have to see the rider. My friend is 6' 5" and runs a lot of drop. WR is tall, has a lot of drop. That Helix up there is a huge frame, therefore, lots of drop makes sense.

Agreed, taller people need more drop. It's a matter of percentages. Beyond that, it depends on other proportions. I know people who get their backs flat with 2" while others can't even get aero with 5". I can't run down a size like the olympian mentioned above suggests, so I can't get more than about 3", but it's enough for me. I'm just long in the torso and short in the legs.

That's very true. In the case of the bikes I posted above (Andrea Tafi's), he is pretty tall. Here are some pictures of him in action:

And apparently one from his Facebook page???

I always liked how he was able to get a low, stretched out position on the bike.

taller riders can go with more drop as they have longer limbs compared to shorter people. if they're flexible enough.
