Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

why single not fixed?

I don't understand why people would have a single gear instead of a fixed gear. I mean since the pedals are still moving doesn't that mean its easier to maintain a certain speed on flatlands?

Coasting is fun. Not everyone is into riding fixed on the road. Taking corners fast and hard is better than keeping your pedal clearance in mind.

Also, don't ask stupid tired questions.

I think coasting isn't that great unless you have rolling hills

If your running low gear inches to make it in extremely hilly areas it sucks spinning out going only 25-30 mph on the downhill side. If your able to coast it, you'll have used no energy at all down hill and get up to 35+ mph. But I'm no chump I'll keep my fixed either way.

Usually big hills are the reason. I love riding fixed, but recently moved to the top of a very big hill with a 4km decent when I ride to work. Going SS means I can go faster and relax on it. Maybe I will switch to FG on the weekends for joy rides, but for now the freewheel will have to stay.

Some people also just think that fixed is really hard and are scared to try. It is easy, as they say, it's just a bike that you can't coast on. That's the only difference.

Also, if you are doing a century or such with one gear, some people do not like to pedal the whole time.

Cus I can trackstand on a freewheel just fine, and ss is easier when I'm drunk. YMMV. Trackstanding drunk is never easy.

this question is teh failz. why do people even ask this question in the first place?

why do people ride geared bikes instead of single speeds?
why do people ride njs equipment in america?
why do people ride italian named bikes?
why do people drive manual transmission cars?
why do people rent apartments for more than a mortgage note would cost?

why do people think that their way is the only way and all other ways are wrong?

(i was afraid of boxer breifs, until my wife bought me some for my birthday. they are great for everything except mowing the lawn. hot as hell during the summer in louisiana.)

I'm sure you sing better when you're drunk, too, right?

I just sold my single speed. It was great to ride. It was geared super low and was extremely relaxing to ride. It forced me to calm down and go with the gearing.
My fixed bike is fun, but it's more of a jet. It makes me want to ride much harder.
They are two totally different things.

I mow my lawn in nothing but my boxer briefs sometimes.

Of course, I wear booty shorts, commando no less, when I am home most of the time, so I think boxer briefs are the least of my neighbors' worries.
