I'm trying to figure out a situation here; I know I want a basket on my bike but I also have panniers I love for when the hauling gets tough. I figure that if I mounted folders to a rear rack (tubus cargo) i couldn't use my ortliebs on there too, or is there enough clearance? If not, should I get a small front rack (eg a Soma mini alloy) and put one folder on there? Any thoughts on steps would be appreciated!

they're heavier, and not removable

for what possible reason could you want one if you already have better?

i'd get a front rack, and some more ortliebs [front rollers] to put on it

I imagine the poster may have situations for which he/she would prefer to have a basket that is not detachable due to theft considerations. If I'm biking to a movie theater, and there's a possibility I could stop at a store afterwards, I don't want to be bringing an ortlieb bag inside with me.

More to the poster's question: I highly doubt you'll have enough clearance to attach an ortlieb pannier over a folding basket. Panniers are meant to be set flush up against the rack. Folding baskets have a fair amount of width to them when folded (maybe an inch). If you really like the concept of folders, you could get a front rack and front orlieb panniers, but that requires dishing out a good amount of dough, and you'd no longer be using your rear ortliebs.

I'd recommend just getting a front basket.

Thanks for the help guys/gals. I love my ortlieb - but living in a big city, there are plenty of times where I want to transport something one way, and not have the bag with me. Examples: bringing booze to a party; picking up something you buy randomly when you're on the way home; helping a friend carry something and then not wanting to have your bag; etc etc.
