Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thats why 7 YEARS is to long to go between bar tape swaps. It's corrosion, thats the white powdery stuff that used to be the aluminum your handle bars were made of. Your sweat and some form of electrolysis (voodoo, witchcraft, black magic, the debill) cause this. An electrolytic reaction. Corrosion....its like rust for aluminum!
My riding buddy Scott, 2 years ago,, was following me on a ride out in the farmlands.. We came to an intersection,, and I couldn't see to the left due to the curve of the road and the height of the corn. At the last second I saw a pickup truck coming our way, so I had to hit the brakes. When Scott hit his brakes his left bar snapped off at the beginning of the bar tape. No warning at all. He rode back, 20 + miles one handed, holding his left handlebar in his hand to keep it from the spokes of the front wheel. How he didn't go down .....
Same thing though, his bars looked like they were made of Talcum powder.
Regular inspections are key to safety. Every other year at a minimum.

I really don't want to swell up like Violet Beauregarde the next time I get stung.
Good luck.

Yup. Corrosion likes crevices and crevices and tight areas because the local micro environment is electrochemically different from the nearby open surface, or that’s my lay understanding.

40 is about right for some regular drops. If you want aero it will be about 90. Atleast that’s how it is at my three LBS.

I think 100% difficulty on Zwift is actually more stressing on the body than actual climbing in the real world. There are plenty of hills around here with stretches of 10+ % grade and they’re far easier to climb than a 10% grade on Zwift.

I may be alone in this, but that’s my experience.

Back in 2015 my buddy bought some inexpensive China carbon bars. In the Tour of the Battenkill race, they snapped as he was on a downhill dirt section going 40. He flipped over the bike and dislocated his shoulder. He then got run over by 2 or three other riders breaking 4 ribs. One of the people that hit him ran over his head, cracking his helmet from end to end and knocking him unconscious.

He was in the hospital a couple of days if I recall, that kind of turned me off to direct from China bars.
