Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2012 Ultegra Di2 Equipped Bikes Delayed

Learned today that Trek and Felt have pushed back delivery dates on Ultegra Di2 equipped models as Shimano isn't going to meet their stated lead time. I'm now faced with a decision... wait four more months for my AR3 w/ Di2 (already ordered), or go with the AR4, pocket the $900 difference, and be riding it next week?

But you have Di2, so Ultegra Di2 should not be vaporware....

How often do you buy a new bike? If you are like me, and I'm not saying you are, you probably buy one every other year or so. Just buy the electronic shifting on the next bike, pick up the AR4 and start riding it now, take the $900 and buy a set of wheels or something equally cool. In a year or so you will be ready for a different bike and happy as a clam about your new Ui2 equipped bike. (that is assuming it isn't vaporware)

Somehow, I'm not surprised. Not a huge deal for most because 2012 models are only just beginning to trickle into the stores.

This is a guy who calls stuff he pays for, "schwag". I don't think you can expect verbal precision from him.

Pcad can't resist a vaporware proclamation.

I also have the option of a 2011 AR3 w/ SRAM Red. Lighter, better wheels, immediate delivery, but $500 MORE... I'd rather do this or wait than settle on the AR4.

Wait or find out how much more for DI2 Durace. You must have a good ride already for now, right?

I thought about this too. Even if they made their initial stated delivery date of Sept 15, cross season starts in 4 weeks. This thing will be sitting waiting for spring anyhow.

Wait for the bike you want, ride your 2nd (or third) bike in the meantime.

You don't have a second bike? Well THERE'S yer problem.

As long as your current bike is in good working condition, you might as well wait.

The only hitch is that it may take more than 4 months. I wouldn't be all that surprised if the ship dates slid a bit more, especially if Di2 is made in Japan rather than Taiwan or mainland China.

Talk to your dealer, perhaps they can cut you a good deal on a DA Di2 because of the delay.

Wait and take up hiking in the mean time.

All the preview I've read on Ultegra Di2 makes me think it's worth waiting for.

Ehh, I'm not sweating it. I want Di2 on my bike just as bad as the rest of you, but the way I see it now I know what to buy myself for Christmas this year.

That AR4 is sweet. If I were you, get the AR4 now and use the $900 to upgrade to electronic shifting in about a year or so when Ultegra Di2 will sell for about that amount.

this - not because of the delay but got a nice deal on a 2011 Felt with DA Di2 which should arrive today or tomorrow. Plan to get lots of miles in before Ultegra Di2 appears in the wild.
