A Pinarello bike was destroyed when the battery of an aftermarket motor burst into flames.
Rider Gary Ryan, 79, suffered burns when the motor caught fire while he was riding the Tour Down Under’s Corkscrew Road climb on Monday (January 14).
Flames were sent 10 feet into the air and fire crews were called to stop the fire spreading, according to Nine News in Australia.

Honestly, I am not surprised, I was riding a Dogma once under full power in a sprint when it burst into flames. No motor. I was due to how many watts I was laying down and exceeding the speed limit of the frame. If you add a motor and ride it through streams no surprise it will catch fire as well.

Not sure why, but this thread reminds me of that "meat slicer" thread about disc brakes after a guy in the pro peloton alleged that his shin was sliced up by a rotor. Doubt this one will end up at 10+ pages and locked, though.

Flames from the motor’s lithium battery set fire to puncture repair CO2 canisters on the bike, causing the blaze to spread to nearby foliage
Aside from the potential projectile resulting from a melted cartridge seal, wouldn't CO2 extinguish a fire?

Or Class B/C (gasoline and electrical respectively)...which you use dry chemical or CO2.
But a battery fire is a metal fire. Metal fires are "Class D" Which is its own thing.You don't use water or CO2, you have to use dry powder extinguishers.

If at your workplace you see fire extinguishers on the wall (hopefully by Code you do)...that is what the "A/B/C" on the side means....you'll virtually never see a Class D or Class K equipment--as those tend to instantly be "call a professional" style emergencies.
Using the wrong equipment can make for massive disasters. The USS Forrestal had a massive fire in 1967 that nearly destroyed the carrier...made worse because emergency fire crews were spraying water at fuel oil fires--doing nothing more than spreading the burning fuel everywhere. Ofc, they were desperate--the professionals on ship were dead or injured, and the proper equipment was the first thing destroyed by ammo explosions.
