any clear trends in handlebar preference (please submit data)...
let's do a quick analysis and see if any correlations appear:
age:
style of handlebar on first adult bike owned:
location:
handlebar preference (break it down by % of total bikes owned):
distance traveled per commute (one way):
average rolling time per commute (one way):
size of main commuting area (metro population):
average number of stop/commute (one way)
hills present or not (average elevation gain/mile ... disregard downhills):
any shoulder/elbow/hand/wrist/finger injuries:
open to any other suggestions (just add them at the end of the list):
cheers!

style of handlebar on first adult bike owned: MTB flat bar
location: Chicago
handlebar preference (break it down by % of total bikes owned): drop bar on primary commuter (road bike), flat bar with clip-on aerobars & Ergon grips/bar-ends on foul-weather commuter (IGH/Disc brake hybrid)
distance traveled per commute (one way): ~14.5 miles
average rolling time per commute (one way): ~1 hour
size of main commuting area (metro population): ~9 million people
average number of stop/commute (one way): too many to count
hills present or not (average elevation gain/mile ... disregard downhills): no hills, chicago is dead flat
any shoulder/elbow/hand/wrist/finger injuries: none specifically, but being too upright does bother my lower back for rides longer than several miles. even my flat bar bike has a couple inches of saddle to bar drop to soothe my back.

Clear trends , Ha!, only local individual preferences..
Depends on the bike.. I have several..
You doing all this on the Clock at work?
the Columbia river has been forced to Go around and through Mountains as they rose ,
thru sea floor spreading pushing Aggregates up and Volcanism.
65 largely retired.. carless in the typical bad american public transport system, scheme
that only Begrudgingly functions to get the Exploited Serfs to the job.
Rohloffs owned , 2 in bikes.. , both with Trekking Bars..
Waiting your shipment of instrumentation to gather requested specific data.
also Own a Brompton M3L with a Schlumpf Mountain drive crank .. M bar + Ergon GR3 grips.
And my Multinational cyclo-camping-touring bike with Nitto Noodle Bars;
a Road and a Cross Bike each with Nitto Dirt drop Bars ..
winter stud tire wearing bike: Nitto Mustache;
Porteur set up bike: Nitto Chrome-Moly Albatross..
commute : around the edge of the Peninsula, near the edge of River And Estuary
since the rest of the town is built on a steep hill.
still use the full range of the 14 R'off gears in the round trip.
Prior injuries mostly healed ,
but As a Veteran of US Nuclear Powered Navy
and downstream of the Hanford Nuclear Weapons creation reactors,
and the accumulated wastes, leaking out of the Tanks into the river.
Waiting for the Ionizing radiation induced Malignancys to fully develop.
my 1st decent bikes; a Puch made 3 speed and a Chicago made Schwinn.
The Mob & CIA had not taken up shooting the POTUS and his AG , brother, back then.

First adult bike with drop bars: Atala Giro D'Italia, in 1975, when I was 14 years old.
I don't have a regular commute currently.
I prefer to be semi-upright when in town on short trips.
I prefer drop bars on rides longer than about 5 miles, because it's less fatiguing. Drop bars are also better for climbing for me.
My main bike is a Bianchi Volpe which has drop bars. It's very comfortable, and converting it would involve replacing the brifters (brake and shifters integrated into one unit) which I don't want to do.
No injuries, and I'm 52 years old now.

style of handlebar on first adult bike owned: drop bars
location: North Carolina, USA
handlebar preference (break it down by % of total bikes owned): drop bars - 80%, bullhorns - 20%
distance traveled per commute (one way): 15.5 miles
average rolling time per commute (one way): 60 minutes
size of main commuting area (metro population): 1 million+
average number of stop/commute (one way): About 15-20 traffic signals and equal number of stop signs per commute
hills present or not (average elevation gain/mile ... disregard downhills): Hills and downhills the whole way (not sure of elevation gain)
any shoulder/elbow/hand/wrist/finger injuries: none at present (altho I used to have persistent numbness until I raised my handlebars years ago)
I have switched to compact drop handlebars on several of my bikes over the past couple of years. They have a shorter drop and reach than most handlebars and are much more comfortable for me, but I do not like mountain bike style or flat bars. Love my bullhorns except when it's real windy.

style of handlebar on first adult bike owned: Flat bar
location: Brooklyn, NY
handlebar preference (break it down by % of total bikes owned): Flat bars, always
distance traveled per commute (one way): average about 7 miles, up to ten
average rolling time per commute (one way): 23-30 min
size of main commuting area (metro population): 8-9 million? way too many
average number of stop/commute (one way) A range of 5-10. Varies daily. Depends on weather, traffic, lunacy of drivers.
hills present or not (average elevation gain/mile ... disregard downhills): bridges. made to be climbed. 50-100 feet, maybe?
any shoulder/elbow/hand/wrist/finger injuries: nope. But I think I'm predisposed towards flat bars because of a lower back injury inflicted on me by teenage me.
