Breaking Away should be required viewing for any one taking out a USCF license for the first time. Sure it will spread misconceptions like racers sticking a pump in someone's front wheel, and the ability to motorpace behing a big rig while you're in the small ring, but it is still a good story. If you don't like the movie, ask your local cable provider for a refund. "...Refund? Refund?..."

Breaking Away is my all time favorite movie. I have it on DVD. If anyone hasn't seen it…then you really ought to. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I do. Great film!

Ah, I grew up in Bloomington IN and was about 10 years old when they were filming the movie. I do remember there was a general casting call for the crowd scenes at the end. Alas, I didn't attend and missed my one chance to be in movies
Southern Indiana is beautiful and the hills abound Brown County can be a killer. For anyone who wants to see the area close up, check out the Hilly Hundred which runs around the Bloomington area (I'm riding it this year with my Dad): https://www.hillyhundred.org/HillyHome.html
Oh yea, great movie. Refund! Refund!

i think i may be the only one who hated breaking away. american flyers was the movie that inspired me to go from hopping curbs and picnic tables on my bmx bike to racing buses on my centurion le mans. yeah, it's hard to watch these days, but i can't deny that american flyers was what did it for me. i still want a red cromo specialized allez!

I was a bit luckier. I attended IU at the time of the filming and watched several scenes being filmed on campus as well as the finale in the stadium for the bike race. Sadly, that stadium was torn down years ago. I've got the movie on DVD. It's so corny and so good!!

American Flyers has some good racing scenes, which is also the extent of Bob Roll's movie career. I've got an uncut version with some topless scenes.

Had they bothered to do a bit of review, they might have caught the fact that the dude is going like 60 mph and then they cut back to him and he's in the small ring. Other than that, great movie.
