Some of my Nalgene bottles are almost 20 years old, they're not cycling specific but they fit perfectly into the water bottle cage. I also have a stainless steel vacuum bottle which is about 10 years old. I like to keep my stuff for a long time.

I had to buy a new one last year because I filled one of my bottles halfway with water and laid it in my freezer overnight. When I went to unscrew the cap the next morning, it broke the plastic part which keeps the mouthpiece sealed. I even ran hot water over the cap for a while before trying to open it. The bad thing was that this was the morning of a century ride. I stopped in at Walmart before heading to the ride starting point and bought the only insulated water bottle they had available.

Keep them clean and the brand name ones last a long time. I do end up with new ones from various events, a couple are even giving away Camelback bottles. So it has been quite a while since a bought a new water bottle.

Generally, when they either get gross beyond the point of repair or the dog eats one.

My Klean Kanteen probably never unless it gets a hole in it. My Camelbaks, I haven't replaced but I do buy new ones every 2 years and kind of swap them around a lot so they don't get too funky. My old mud caps need some good cleaning now so I might do that and use my new bottles.

Between the insulated (and non-insulated) bottles I've bought on purpose or on impulse, and the scads of bottles I've scavenged from the dump zones at the Redlands Bicycle Classic, we probably have like... 70 water bottles?

I've been using the same pair of Camelbak Podium Big Chills for 4 years. Pretty much all the logos have worn off, but they still work just fine. They only come out of service a few months a year when the Podium ICE take their place.

I use empty gatorade bottles. When one starts getting beat up, I lose it or forget it, I buy a gatorade.

You've got that backwards. Freds don't care about matching bottles, or matching anything for that matter.

I actually broke one last year when my "put a cage on the handlebar" experiment proved to be a bad idea.
Very convenient, but you have to check whether the bottle is bouncing loose every few seconds on a bumpy road.

I replace when they start to leak. Otherwise, they are good for a long time.

Every spring I send my scratched or out of date ones to Pacific island nations for disposal in the ocean.

But how do you clean them? Do you use a mixture of water and a little bleach?

Unless the bottle cracks or the nozzle doesn't work there is no need to buy a new one.

finally got rid of a hi-viz green one that I detested cuz of how it looked in photos. keep them clean & they last a ridiculous amount of time

I wash them in the sink with regular dish soap and a bottle brush. Should I be using bleach and if so what ratio on the mixture and swish it around, let it sit?
