Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheels were fantastic this morning. Hub sounds like the enve wheels when coasting, that quiet mechanized hummmmmmm. Out of all the wheels I have owned these are quickest to engage.

I must have done something when I put the wheel back on, because the shifting is now horrible. The cassette came off the wheels I swapped so it can’t be that. Going up and and down it’s missing shifts, occasional ghost shift, and won’t go onto the biggest cog or the littlest cog. I am hoping to just drop it off at the shop today but not sure that will happen.

My garmin varia camera is really starting to bother me. I left it charging for 12 hours and this morning when it connected it showed half life. 2 hours into the ride I got low battery message. All I use on it is the radar and camera, I don’t use the light.

Time crunched TT session this morning, 1x30' mostly EZ with the last 7.5 min into z4, a notch below race pace. HR/cardio was totally reasonable but man my legs hurt; this really does take some adaptation.

First club TT is in February. I will need to put in some harder sessions on the turbo if I want my glutes and hammies to be up to the task. I like to race the 20k instead of the 40k, because I don't hate myself.

got some work to do

It is the time of year when I need to give my wife my race calendar. This year will feature no events outside of the county, no RRs or stage races, only a couple local criteriums and TTs. Maybe a track night or three.

There are some legacy San Diego road races that have made comebacks this year, which is great. I will not have the legs required for those, maybe in a subsequent season when we are past this infancy and I can get more long rides in.

This is smart, I usually wait til the month of, at the end of the day I have to get off by work and have my wife approve for me to make it.

Despite all the forum discussion on tire width, I've never been able to notice any difference between 23/25/28 on my road bike so I'm not surprised. If it was my bike I'd be annoyed -as it just isn't right - but likely be too unmotivated to swap.

Yes. Couldn’t tell the ones that I had from road shoes. They were shaped and made just like a road shoe with a hard sole except they had a recessed cleat. My wife had a pair of Sidis like that many years ago.

The other day, after doing the Old La Honda Climb Portal on Zwift, Intervals.icu adjusted my eFTP up to 250. So Wednesday night, I decided to try a Sweet Spot workout with that as my FTP, yielding 4 x alternating 5 minute segments of 240 and 220 w. I did half of it, and decided I still need to work up to the full workout, so I tried skipping ahead to the cool down part. I'd been doing okay on the last 220w segment, then the trainer was trying to do 240w while I was trying to figure out how to skip segments using the Zwift Play controllers. That took a minute or two. And then I found the cool down, from 180 down to 150 over 5 minutes, to be surprisingly difficult. I was having trouble keeping the cadence up and it almost felt more difficult than the last 220w leg. Weird. I also felt tired and drained after I stopped.

Then I ate something, and I felt a lot better. I didn't feel like I was suffering low blood sugar, but maybe? Dunno. I think I need to standardize my afternoon snack/coffee routine.

Last night's ride went fine, no LBS feelings. Tonight, I think I'm gonna try OLH again. Maybe aim a little higher for average power, see if I can make myself feel like puking...

I had/have a pair from around 2010: Specialized 'Touring' shoes. Kind of worn out, but I still use them -- can't give 'em up. Very 'road' look, but with spd cleats. I wish I could still get a pair, but long out of production.

That's what I have on the CFRP-soled road shoes I use for commuting. Fine for an elevator ride and a clip-clop to the office.

I would go drive to the state TT course to do my 3x20' or whichever TT workout was on tap, which was about an hour drive after work. I did that because I didn't want to do TT work on the trainer, because I don't hate myself.

I do understand the time crunch part though.

Haha ya it takes some getting used to. In San Diego the race (and training) course is Fiesta Island, a 4.2 mile one way loop. It's a 30 min spin away so I do get some real-world time in. I mean not as much this season, but often.

I also rarely go at our over race wattage when riding my TT bike on the trainer, b/c I only kinda hate myself

For a daily dose of classical, here is the lovely Tiffany Poon playing the dramatic "Love Dream", or "Liebestraum" from Liszt. I guess Liszt was stately and handsome, and made dramatic, impressive pieces (he had huge hands) and quite literally had panties and bras thrown at him on stage. A true rock star of his era.

For those into the French alternative band Phoenix, the song "Lisztomania" is a direct reference to his stardom.

If I ever get back to riding and I need new pedals or shoes I think I'll go spd so I can walk with them on. At this point in my life I ain't foolin' anyone that I'm a serious cyclist.

I thought about those but I was trying to get away from the raised front like my normal road shoes.

Mine might have been Specialized also. I was thinking they were Shimano but my old shop carried both brands so may well have been Spec.
