Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I remember wood-soled cycling shoes from back in the day. They were considered good, IIRC.

Got some real low grade pain on the left patella last few hamster wheel sessions. I think all the zwift hammering contributes to that a bit, more of a fixed position, and for some reason I tend to mash a lower cadence. I seem to deal with knee issues that set me back a bit every few years.

But this is real early stage, thinking I can knock it out with the usual combo of RICE, kinesio KT tape, stretching, foam rolling and ibuprofen. We'll see. The KT tape is real miraculous stuff if there is some tightness imbalance somewhere. I have been lazy about stretching lately so this is what I get.

I let soreness be my guide. If quads are sore to the touch, I'll do a flat ride with high cadence, maybe 1.5 hours or so. If I'm doing a hilly ride, and quads burn when standing, I'll switch to a less hilly route.

Every so often, I have problems with my lower back/hip area. It happens often enough that I remember the last time, but not often enough that I remember all the issues/triggers. For example, yesterday I discovered that simply not wearing a belt made a HUGE difference, and then I remembered that it had similarly made a huge difference the last time. Did I remember that when the issue first arose? No. I spent 3 days wearing belts and popping ibuprofen when I might have been feeling a lot better sooner.

Last night was the first time since Sunday that I rode the trainer. Very slight discomfort, which did not worsen and may have slightly improved. Of course, I started out by telling myself I'd only do half an hour, since I was recovering from an injury. After my usual warmup/spindown on Tempus Fugit, I went to Greatest London Loop, telling myself I'd stop before Leith Hill.

Did I do that? No, I did not. Instead, I went up Leith Hill. Ended up doing the whole route. So much for taking it easy.

LT repeats on a dumb trainer? No, thank you. Torture -- even on a smart trainer.

Those multiple LT workouts seem almost fun to me when doing hill repeats. It must be the "get to the top" motivation that keeps me going.

I was doing them last year on Mt. Hamilton: climb, descend, rest a minute or two, repeat. About 60 minutes of LT total. I saw some nice improvement.

IMO, it's also the trainer.

I did Virtual Old La Honda at a pace of 3.2 W/kg. It felt pretty brutal.

As a comparison, I then did a real ride up to Huddart Park, trying to keep the same effort. I ended up doing 3.55 W/kg, and it felt much easier.

Doing them on a climb is way more doable, maybe even fun. Esp since the speed is somewhat repeatable so you have benchmarks on the side of the road. There are no great climbs around here for me to do that but there were in college (Humboldt State). OLH seems like it would be good for that. Is it 20 minutes long for most riders?

Haven't done a club ride in 2 weeks and I hope to do one tomorrow with the right people. Went out for a short ride this morning to loosen up a bit. Got rained on a little and saw a dead crow which reminded me of this.

Biggest problem with the idea of hill repeats on OLH is the descent sucks for all the same reasons the climb rocks - narrow, low traffic, steep pitches, twisty. You don't need long sight lines on a climb, but they're real damn handy on a descent!

I have some Wigwam merino wool socks in a medium weight. They are mid calf height and extremely comfortable. Warmer than other socks but not a cure-all.

Based on time and RPE, I feel like my most recent Virtual OLH effort - 2.8 w/kg - was about what I could do IRL. Can't really tell since I don't have a power meter, so I only get power on the trainer. I was just shy of the "feel like puking" level, but it was close.
