Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lightest saddle under $100

Or slightly above.

My current saddle weighs 413 g and I'm wondering if maybe I shouldn't swap it for something more "elegant". What would be the lightest option on a $100 budget? I need a saddle that works well for 6+ hour trips.

The best I could find so far is Prologo Scratch Pro, it is supposedly 242 g and I can get it for $118 from Amazon or as low as $95 from some questionable online dealers. Can I do better?

Are you sure? It looks like Toupe and Romin are both stiff saddles with minimal padding. Specialized's long-distance saddle is Avatar (that's what their site says, anyway), and that one is heavier than Prologo Scratch Pro.

I've seen a deal on Ebay for Eddy Merckx OEM Prologo Scratch Pro saddles for around 50 dollars plus shipping, claimed to be sub 250 grams. If you want new, from the shop, Ritchey Marathon WCS should be around 100 or less and sub 250 grams.

I wouldn' focus on the cushy "long distance" or "touring" saddles though; a firm saddle with little padding can be surprisingly comfortable if the shape is right.

Padding isn't what makes a saddle comfortable. Having a shape that fits you is. There are plenty of saddles in the 200-250 gram range. You just need to try them. Some shops have test models. Taking recommendations from anybody is useless unless you somehow know that they have exact same ass shape as you and ride in the exact same position.

San Marco Concor - 215 grams, 128mm wide, $100.

San Marco Regal - 371 grams, 150mm wide, but comfy! $100

I've got the Regal on my steel Bianchi and really like it. I've done a lot of business with this company and they're first rate.

I agree - why would anyone buy as saddle based solely on weight? Especially for longer rides? Makes no sense ...

in fact, many pros ride heavier, non-sponsor saddles because they're more comfortable/fit better. Lance Armstrong being one prominent example.

it's a personal thing. I've done a couple of centuries with the Romin last year with no problems. The Toupe (xmas gift) seems ok too. Although I haven't done a century with it (about 50 miles) but I'm working on it.

Go to a LBS and see if they have a saddle exchange policy or something. Try all of them. Goodluck on your search bud.

Take a look at the Ritchey Streem line. They're around 200g each and the most expensive one is $120 MSRP, (so you can get it for $100 online I'm sure).

+1 on all who have chimed in regarding shape vs. padding. When I started doing brevets (really long distance just in case your not familiar ) I was using an original Flite...no problems. Roughly 190g and very comfy on 200+ mile rides. If your current saddle is a good shape for you, try some out that has similar dimensions (length, width) and go from there. Also, definitely find a place (if your buying new) that has a good exchange policy.

I bought a Fizik Antares with carbon rails on eBay for $120. Yes, it was used, but it was in great condition. Since saddles are such a personal thing, many people buy and sell several until they find one that fits. There are plenty of low mileage saddles to be had on eBay.

Padding does NOT equal comfort. The right chamois + saddle that fits you = comfort.

I have a Toupe Expert and it's comfortable.

and try going on the used route. Toupe/Romin Expert go for under $100 on EBAY. Make sure you measure your sit bones first.

I can also vouch for the Romin. Mine was 80 from the LBS and is supremely comfortable. 241g according to my scale. Did 52 miles on it a week ago with no issues at all.

I did a 5.5 hour ride yesterday on really crappy roads and I was mostly fine. If the roads were well paved it would not have been a problem at all for me. I have the Toupé Expert, with the least amount of padding. They also offer gel saddles, but they will not be as light.

It's kind of hard to get a light saddle with a lot of padding. However, coming from your current saddle, anything is light.

A little more than what your looking to spend, but Williams has some nice looking light seats on his site.

Like the others have said, minimal padding is fine for long rides. I've done ~5000mi along with a few 12 hour days on a Romin, and was perfectly fine. I think mine weighed 150grams or so, but I got the one that was a little bit more than $100 (Romin Pro). What I hear (and what I felt) was the carbon rails absorb a little extra shock compared to the metal rails, so that may have something to do with how comfortable I am on mine. Wait for a sale if you can, I think I got mine 25% off at the LBS during one of their sales.

all of those generic ebay carbon saddles I've looked at are way too narrow for me. I need at least 140mm.
