Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The question was a pointed reminder of the good old days, at the prior witch doctor's office, where even the receptionist knew I was a cyclist. I stopped by there a few times on my bike to drop stuff off. I think they thought I was kind of crazy.

Imagine that.

Still raining, from Gamma, and now we've got this one coming through. We are on the southern edge of the cone, on the western half of the peninsula. 7+ inches currently in the rain guage. Today was to be the last. Looks like at least one more.

Many glass half full options:
1) We are not in the city, a place with no storm sewers. It would be a large lake by now, with water in the houses and businesses as well. No motor traffic on the streets unless you have very high clearance.
2) We have a half hectare of our own and open land on all sides. But a lake is still forming out back.
3) The house is a half meter up from grade
4) The house is well stocked
5) The patch on my portion of the roof has worked wonderfully. If we can find an hour without rain, there is another spot that needs it.
6) There is no place either of us needs to go.
7) We are in pancake land. No valleys to fill with run-off. The south of the state, where there are hills and valleys, is likely suffering massively. And to top it off, they are in the midst of the citrus harvest. Let's hope they don't lose it.

I wish we could send a couple days worth to California.

He needs to send them down to the Le Roy Casey's off of 74.

Masked / unmasked ratio was, at the time I was in there yesterday evening, 3/8

You have to get past that if you're going to keep a cat in the house. We get gifts of frogs and salamanders along with the mice. Our doors are never fully closed

Ended up with 1800 miles and about 30 hours in the car.

Worth it:

Dismantled the woodpile yesterday and found at least four mice, who tried to stare me down before running away. They're cute outdoors. In the house, I want them dead.

We have a rat in the attic. I've got three traps set up, and he just makes fun of me by eating the bait and not setting them off. There's even one Hard plastic trap that he's chewed the edges that were once rectangular and now round. I'm hoping that he's not done that to important structures or cables.

Tried smearing peanut butter as bait?

Yeah, rodents are not dumb. My experience of trapping mice is that you can get one or two, after which the community become very cagey for a while, but don't go away, witness continued ****ting all over. I found Boston area mice the easiest to trap, Maryland ones harder, and NYC: forget it. I have one rat experience involving a handsome creature who was feeding on a pile of spillage under a bird feeder in broad daylight. I disposed of the food source and set a trap, but that was just ethologically pointless.

I had to finish off the first one with my foot. Thought someone was breaking into the house. My metal Specialized floor pump even got knocked over during the chase. The second was already dead when I found him. Looked to have been dead a while. Days. Cat must have been using him as a toy then left him at the bottom of the stairs.

6 total road cyclists, none in TN.

One who I imagined would be shortly freezing his ass off descending the Blue Ridge Parkway in 45° temps.

Two groups of two on a little back road near Mt. Mitchell.

One on a back road near Greenville SC.
