Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, about a year ago my credit union started doing the ol' text a code to you method of two factor authentication. I haven't asked if they'll text to non-US phone numbers.

Kind of dangerous though, no?

I once knew someone whose father was killed flying up there.

I think the danger factor comes from the fact your flying over a lot of unpopulated areas, and some of the terrain you cannot safely put it down if you had too. Most of the planes up there are fitted with survival kits so if you do go down you have a chance. My aircraft did not, but with that being said I really didn’t fly that far away from my base. I lived in anchorage, most of my flying was around anchorage, wasila, and palmer. All relatively short flights.
Since I have left, two friends have died up there. One had a bird strike by an eagle, all four on board including the eagle didn’t make it. The other, engine failed on take off and he spun in.

On one of my less frequently visited forums, there's a "Craigslist posters have gone nuts" -type of thread. If the 41 had a similar thread, I'd certainly have a candidate CL ad.

I've been using the Domane's stock rear wheel for the trainer, so I've been keeping an eye out for deal on a replacement. Just came across an ad for a take-off Bontrager wheelset from a Checkpoint ALR (aluminum frame, 105 groupset). The wheels are one or two steps below my stock wheels, which weigh in at ~2kg. The guy is asking $450.

I'm a James Taylor fan and listen to him wherever I find him. And by the way, if you don't have kids in the house, get some. Kids like nothing better than seeing other kids on the screen.

Agree. I would actually try riding tomorrow outside with morning temps around 18F, but daughter #2 has a concert at 11AM so I am doing a fake group ride in the basement.

I envy you guys who can do that. Despite significant investment in gear, my hands now get too numb to shift and brake properly and forget about the feet. Then, after I get home and take the gloves off, the Raynauds hits. I can still do the 20 min commute in any temp, but I'm limited to about freezing for anything longer.

Sunday is looking the best for me. 38°, sunny, and light winds.

I really need to start getting some saddle time in, so I'm hoping to do maybe 40-50.

The first brevet of the season is May 02. I'd like to get a handful of 100k - 160k rides in before then.

Everyone has their own tolerance to cold. If it's above freezing, I am ok with gloves. For 20's, I wear mittens with glove liners. No problem. For below 20, I also throw in a chemical hand warmer.

The coldest I have ridden that way was somewhere around 6 or 7F. That's as cold as it ever gets around here. I would not say the ride was fun, but we did it for 2 hours and survived. I do have to go from glasses to ski goggles if it's below 20 also because exposed skin anywhere freezes.

I have some friends with Raynaud's who have battery warmed socks and gloves, with mixed results.

Nothing gets under my craw more neighborhood-wise than the lazy people who don't tamp down their recycling on a windy day. Crap gets blown everywhere. The responsible parties should be required to police the neighborhood early Saturday morning. A close second is people who drop their dog poop bags next to others' trash. Hello! Have you not noticed that the trash collectors do not pick up dog poop bags?!?! These people need punishment as well.

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hate wearing a bunch of stuff when I ride. I will tolerate it when I am touring since the scenery usually makes up for it and I don't have the option of not riding. But no way am I going to don a bunch a winter stuff for cold rides around here.

Maybe I am strange, but I honestly don't mind wearing an extra layer or two for riding. It only becomes burdensome to me when it's below say 15-ish degrees F, but some of my must fun rides have been sunny winter days in the 20's. Way better than the trainer, for sure. Riding with friends for company helps BTW.

I didn't know about this until I made the mistake of joining NextDoor, but some people, at least in MN, get upset by dog owners throwing poop bags in their garbage cans as they pass by on the walk. Given the alternatives, I don't understand the ire.

On the drive back from the store yesterday, I noticed that the road that I was on was in pretty good condition - ice/snow encroaching from the sides, sure, but otherwise free from debris and pothole free (many roads look like war zones right about now). "Hoo hoo - maybe I should take the new Cervelo out for a spin around the neighborhood!" I thought... and then I remembered that it was -7° at the time. Yeah, pass.

No doubt. I'm not a raccoon, so the garbage can isn't my dinner plate. Nextdoor is weird.... Some good info, but you sure get some input to your neighbors psyche, and it's slightly terrifying.

Yes. Shorter ride is called a Populaire, and that's in the range of 100k to 199k.

I don't care if they put it in someone's garbage can or garbage bag set out on the curb. I am talking about the people who leave the poop bags on the sidewalk next to garbage cans and bags. The collectors leave them behind. I'm sure it's part of their collective bargaining agreement.

That's an understatement.

Side note: if you happen to be on any of the social networks, The Best of NextDoor is a great account to follow; it highlights the bat**** crazy that is NextDoor.
