Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I broke the strap on the rear light mount trying that exact thing, so I don't have a lot of confidence.

The mount works great. I didn’t know anything about this brand, I guess she asked the guy at REI and he recommended it. Reviews look good, I am happy with it.

Winning argument! If I have more, maybe I'll try a little carbon assembly friction paste.

I usually wear two pairs of socks. But my toe covers are so tight I can’t.

Its on the list of things to get. I asked you guys before it got really cold, everyone said to get booties. To save on cost I got just the toe covers. They really don’t work below 40. Almost makes them kind of useless. I went with the castelli because they were thicker than the pearl izumi, but Im not sure if thicker is better.

I'm fairly happy with mine. I can attest to durability as well. Mine got run over by a car and aside from a bit of road rash it still works fine

I would guess that it's likely fine if you put it on once and leave it. If you're moving it around to different bikes or taking the mount on and off it gets stressed a lot more.

Yeah, everyone has their own sensitivities, but for ME the toe-covers are ok around freezing or upper 20's, but once it's really cold well below freezing, you can't beat the booties. Some people like to throw a chemical handwarmer/toewarmer in there for insurance, I don't bother with those unless it's SUPER COLD like 10F and that's only about a once/year event for me.

Oh, there it is - gaiter, helmet, glasses - oops, forgot the hat. Hat, helmet, glasses, shoes, booties. Where are my gloves? Oh, across the room. Waddle over there and damn - shoes are a little loose - take off the booties or try and fumble with the adjustments through the neoprene?

I think that it took me a good 20 minutes to get yesterday, so eliminating steps here and there would be nice.

One thing to be aware of with two pairs of socks - if they're compressing too much, they may not be a net benefit. Insulation in compression just isn't as effective and it can also cut down on circulation. With my shoes and my feet, I find that one pair of heavier socks works better than two pair of medium weight.

I've tried my best to re-organize my winter cycling gear into a dedicated spot this year. I've spent way too much time in my life searching for a little black headband that blends in with absolutely everything.

My cold weather fix is to stay TF home (regardless of the fact I haven't been to the gym since pre-covid.)

Also why I found that normal full finger gloves don’t help for me.

Yeah, at a certain point it makes sense to just drink the kool-aid and go on Zwift. For me it's about 10F or snow/ice covered roads. I don't have studly tires like some people....

I have two of them, an old 650 and a new 750. The micro USB receptacle in the 650 broke off after about 10 years of use, so I bought the new one. I sent the broken one to NiteRider and they did a complete overhaul, incl. new battery and return shipping, for 25 bucks. I am very satisfied.

Yeah, when I bought gloves a few weeks ago, I went one or two sizes up because holding on to the bars effectively shortens the glove fingers and compresses the insulation. The extra bulk can make for some fumbled shifts, but the warmth has been considerably better; I haven't even had to use the additional glove liners that came with them, yet.

I have a fleece lined jacket that I wear when it is freezing or below. It works well but doesn’t have any pit vents. Thinking about having my mother in law install some.

Yeah, I really should set stuff out the night before if I know that I'll be going out, but still, eliminating a piece here and there (winter boots instead of shoes and booties, winter bibs with chamois instead of bibs under tights, etc) would mean less to keep track of and less to stretch on/peel off. I'll eventually get there.

I have to say, before I discovered Bike Forums in 2004 I considered myself a cycling fanatic. But that view was based only on comparisons with my friends and my cycling circle.

Now that I've met you people on BF I clearly see that fanaticism is entirely relative, because there's no way I ever considered riding through the winter. My cutoff temperature was and still is around 55 degrees . . . . maybe 50 if it's a bright sunny day with no wind.

But nooooo, you people are true fanatics, and proud of it! (Nothing personal.) We are totally different people.

I think that, on my ride days - which are the same as yours, I think (Wed, Sat, Sun) - I'd like to be able to get outside unless it's brutal, and then have hour long z2 trainer rides on my off days. I don't know that I'll get to that point this year, but it's what I'm aspiring to.

Yes, same schedule. My hope is to adjust my work schedule so that I drop to 3 days/week so I can ride 4 days/week....and eventually semi-retire and work 2 days/week so I can ride 5 days/week.

Lobstah gloves. I have extreme cold type ones and these, which I can wear with lighter gloves and take off and stow as it gets warmer.
