Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2012 Giant Defy Advanced has landed...finally.

Ok so I have been waiting for this bike since before Christmas. The fork issue had Giant instituting an order stop which was released on Monday of this week for all of the models affected by the fork issue. As soon as the order stop was lifted my bike was ordered and it was in stock and shipped the same day....and arrived today.

Here she is 2012 Giant Defy Advanced 2 in M/L. I choose the 2 model because of the color and the fact that I was going to build up with SRAM Red, I figured that I wasn't going to get $700 more for the Force take offs than the Ultegra take offs.

Bike before the full strip...I had my LBS press our the BB as it needed switched thus no cranks.

Stripped frame 1012g

I will update the thread after I finish the build.

Huh, so is this cheaper than buying a bare frame? Or were you willing to pay more for this color.. (I think that's what you said.)

Can't buy the bare frame, only sold as a complete bike. They sell the Advanced SL as a frame but I didn't want the integrated seat post. After my discount and what I expect to get for the Ultegra components and wheels the frame will have cost me less than $2k or about the same as I would have paid for a new Specialized Roubaix SL3 frame set.

Uh, it's in the pic. No fork there, and you can see the reading on the scale.

A three pound frameset for a Defy is pretty sweet. I was looking at the Defy Advanced series when looking for a new bike, but the large, square down tubes and wide, flat top tubes just didn't appeal to me. It's a shame, because I really like Giant bikes and loved my Defy 2.

And here is the finished bike. Let's call this one "Blame it on Bonktown" as that is where the wheels and shifters came from. I'm thinking of picking up a white Specialized Romin and some white bar tape as the look of the stock bike was nice...just worried about keeping the white clean.

Bars are Reynolds Ouzo Pro Anatomic, saddle is a Specialized Romin, wheels are Reynolds DV3K. The gruppo is a mix of Red and Apex at this point. I will be getting the new Red derailleurs when they become available to round out the Red gruppo. The Apex bits will due for a few months.

There is a little saddle to bar drop though it doesn't look like it from the angle of the photo. I went with one of the upright endurance geometry bikes because a) I don't race b) I'm getting older c) back surgery in Sept of 2010 makes a lot of drop painful. The fit is close but I will be heading to the LBS for a full fitting in the next week or so.

I believe there is a fork recall for the 2012 defy advanced. You may want to check with your LBS.

Did you even read the first post or are you simply commenting on the thread title? I knew about the fork issue a month before the recall and so did Giant. They have resolved the issue and my bike has the new fork.

Very nice! I was thinking of getting the Dv3k's, how are they? My lbs told me they have some kind of spoke issues.

Honestly I don't have a clue yet. They currently have zero miles...as does the bike. I hate riding in 30* temps...might have to do it anyway.

Tell me about it, it's sunny here so I have to go out . Report back with your findings when you test it out!

Will do...and I'm a Clyde so I will be toward the upper end of the abuse scale though I am fairly easy on wheels even given my weight.

Nice looking bike..... from the side. I really like the black and white water cages. Did they REALLY need to put the GIANT/GIANT on the front? I think even Trek has reduced the number of Trek decals on the 2012 bikes.

Sweet looking bike!

Out of curiosity, did you deicide against the advanced SL version with ISP because of the lack of adjustability, hassles traveling with an ISP bike, potential resale problem, or some other reason or combo of above? Looks like Giant uses a proprietary aero seatpost on the bike? Just curious... Thanks!
