Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The world definitely has a post-apocalyptic vibe to it these days.

Last night, the smoke from the fires near Santa Cruz crept up the Peninsula, and then poured down into my town. Went to bed last night with 'Moderate' air and woke up to 'Unhealthy'.

Right now, it's clearing out a bit - we're back down to the border of "moderate" and "unhealthy for sensitive groups". We'll see if it gets sufficiently breathable to ride by 4 or 5.
Ended up riding in the garage. I found some YouTube videos of rides I like, including the local benchmark climb. I've done the climb so many times I knew exactly where I was the whole rid - including the right hand hairpin that's 20% on the inside of the curve.

With the celebration all done, all I can say is, if I stuck to rule number 2, everything would have been fine.

Maybe you have heard of my people’s mountains? The dAtlas Mountains. The GCN crew did a video on bike packing through them. Looks epic.

There are some inclines and the occasional gully that you go down in to/up out of, but not much by way of actual hills. Monticello east of New Town, right by your new place, is the closest thing to a hill that I can think of in the area, and that's not exactly long enough for the kind of intervals that you'd want to do (5min+). The good news is that you'll have enough open roads to at least do some longer intervals without stopping, starting, and turning this way and that every half mile.

Needed to pick up some coffee beans, so I decided to take the scenic route on the bike and make up for the rain-out this morning. Hit a nice chunk of something and had a good hisser on the back wheel, but it closed up after 8-10 revolutions so I continued on my merry way. I'll have to inspect the tire pretty closely - I think that I'm coming up on 2.5k on the rear tire and it's taken at least 5+ punctures, so it may be getting close to the end of the line.

My wife’s family has a creek named after them and supposedly it’s about a mile from my house but it can’t be much because I can’t find it when I ride by on my bike.

It definitely doesn’t pass any real muster as a mountain.
One good thing about living here is easy access to mountains. That picture I posted is about 32 miles from my door. The top of that road is only 5700 feet but the main road below goes up to 8000. There are trails to 10,000 feet off that road.

We have a street in Bamberg, Germany. A post-war gesture by the children of the folks who turned those who thought it would all blow over and didn’t leave over to the Nazis.
