Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tights over shorts, if it's too cold for knee warmers.

My cousin has a house in Leadville and I visited him on the same trip during which I climbed the 14er. It was my first day at altitude and we did some MTBing. It was nothing too strenuous, but I don't remember any particular problems.

Have thermal tights. Yesterday's ride in the low 50s in shorts had me wishing for some non-thermal tights. Thermal would been too much, but shorts were not enough. No place around here has any stock, so I'm trying to decide on a product to fill the gap.

No. She's 25 and I'm 63. I know my limitations.

But, I did get my 21 year old on a bike Thanksgiving weekend, and he was toast after 8 miles while I was just getting warmed up.

Knee warmers are better than lightweight tights, in my opinion. They are easy to remove and stow on a ride, don't add bulk, and are cheap.

They also don't cover up the club name on your shorts, for those of us who are into such things.

Those question marks are on a forum that happens to be on the internet.

I don't understand why that question was even asked.

I wear shorts in the 50s, anytime I need tights I’m in thermal. Yesterday I was in thermal tights, jacket, full face covering etc, was 30 degrees with 15-25mph winds.

I've got a set of knee warmers from The Black Bibs that I'm a fan of. Although to be fair they are the only ones I've ever owned.

They tend to run out of stock quickly, but looks like all sizes are in stock at the moment.

I don’t have any thermal bibs or tights yet. When it’s below 40 I wear my thermal leg warmers under my bib shorts. It has worked for me in temperatures as low as 25 degree American.

I keep my knees covered when it's under about 63º F and often above that.

Bib knickers are great in those middling temps, though I can see opting for knee warmers if you don't often ride in those conditions.

Speaking of knees, mine have been aching a lot on my recent rides

I went to 172.5 cranks on the SLT and that's where I notice it the most. The Trek has the same crank length but I don't really recall much soreness happening there. Maybe because I tend to push harder on the SLT. I typically don't fret about little changes like that all that much since I've always been fairly adaptable (maybe read "young"). But I seem to remember seeing a recent comment from an addictionite about biomechanics and peril...

Rode the fixed gear with 170mm arms yesterday and had some soreness afterwards while driving around but not during.

For this morning's commute, I wore MTB pants over worn out tights and shorts. Legs felt good.

Everyone is different, but I don't ever get/use bibs with a chamois. For temps above freezing I use leg/knee warmers. For below freezing I use tights OVER shorts (so 2 layers on shorts area), and if WAY below freezing do both tights over shorts AND leg warmers.

Bottom line is find what works for your needs.

I tried the tights over shorts (not bib tights) and the tights wouldn't stay up no matter what. I also have that problem with most leg warmers but I found some that have grippers on the outside and they stay up while riding but will fall if I walk around a bit. I guess my guads aren't massive enough.

Mystery, oxymoronic term as frost is passive and heave is an action.

Ridiculously windy here again today, supposed to get worse tonight. Pizza guy invited me and one other on a ride for pizza tomorrow and hopefully the wind won't be too bad on the route.
Here he is waiting for me on a ride in the mountains we will ride the base of tomorrow.
