Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Glad you had good weather for it. Wind in only bad for half the ride.

Have a great sail. A picture of a yacht like that is always impressive, and even more so with a bicycle incorporated into the spinnaker pattern!!

I see a bike there too! We're not going to declare the spinnaker because it looks like a pretty tight reach all the way and we don't want the rating hit, but they may use it on the way back.

Weekend weather in Missoula looking nice at this point. Low 80s with sun during the day. Low fifties with dark at night. Good tenting weather.

15 of the 16 miles of that climb are not paved. The descent on the ID side is.

Ah, yes. You get the climbing over with early, but going E-W could entail some adverse wind.

Yeah but we didn't notice/appreciate it until the second half. Such is life.

Yeah, I rode about 40 mi on Saturday a.m. and had the same experience. And, as people have demonstrated elegantly here, wind in any direction is a net disadvantage on a loop.

You never know. I have descended mountain passes heading east into really strong headwinds. Despite the logging that has taken place (you can see the effects on satellite view), there is still a decent amount of forest, which may provide shelter from any wind. What is going to make the climb harder is that there are no services en route or at my day's destination. That means I have to carry enough water, and food/snacks for the climb along with food for camp. I do get a 6 miles warm up from day 1's camp. The town of St. Regis has services, including a 24 hr. store/restaurant, so I will stock up there and likely mix a bottle of Perpetuem.. Plan is to hit the road early. Twilight starts at 5:03 that day.

Oh brother. It's part of the "culture" of my office that we not turn away patients that are late. But I really pride myself that I run on time. I have a husband/wife team who were scheduled for 9:30 and 9:45AM today and they just came in at 10AM.

Sad.

Oh, yeah. Purely a statistical matter. It blew like crazy out of the East here all weekend. Good luck!

I'm hoping the road is in decent shape. I've been told by a cyclist on another forum that the ID is really quiet. I'll be riding it on a Monday and am curious about how many vehicles I will encounter. Camping that night along the St. Joe River.

The next day is mostly dirt and includes three rail-trails (two are dirt), including this, which I am excited to ride:

https://www.ridethehiawatha.com/

Once I make it up to Lookout Pass on the NorPac Trail I can descend for 7 miles on I-90, but I am going to try to take the NorPac Trail down.

charge them a late fee. make the late fee double the normal consulting fee. financial pain can be a great behavior modifier.
