Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I picked it up yesterday with a bunch of other random jerseys. It’s a bike shop in Atlanta near freedom park. Just thought I would ask.

I used that IM when I was racing to call the starts. And, yes, cheap enough to put it through the wringer and then buy a new one every few years.

You have to do what your knees want. One friend does massive heel out on the left side only and straight on the right. I can go slightly toe out on the left but the right demands extreme toe out.
When I started with clips and straps and flat shoes (we called them touring shoes) I found toe out was the easiest on my knees. I tried to copy that position when I started using clipless but everything hurt my knees. I ended up drilling my own mounting holes in my shoes and eventually a machinist made pedal adapters for me.

They are now on the market from a few sources. The ones I use are Kneesavers.

Pedal Adapters (kneesaver.net)

The deepest that my body has ever been submerged is maybe 8 feet. The watch has never been submerged that I can recall. I like to snorkel, but I don't dive. Our pool is only 6' at the deepest, and I go down to the bottom of that regularly to get things off the bottom.

I've been in those tourist submarines in the islands to depths of about 100-110', but never got wet. While technically submerged, I don't think that's what you're asking.

The deepest I've ever gone was about 130' down the side of this thing. We went down fast and I got pretty intense nitrogen narcosis. I was freezing cold, the sharks and the darkness gave me the creeps, and I wasn't wearing a watch.

No, scuba, free diving, cleaning barnacles off the boat, other.

Went scuba diving one time in Mexico. I was given an introductory lesson in a swimming pool. I remember my instructors english was about as good as my spanish. The pool wasn’t even deep enough for me to go completely underwater. The regulator kept falling out of my mouth, but I was told that’s okay! Followed by thumbs up.

Go out on a boat, it was going to be a 20 foot dive. Where we stopped ended up being a 40 foot dive. It took me about 4 to 6 tries to make it to the bottom. My regulator kept falling out. Finally made it to the bottom and after about three mins I decided I didn’t want to be down there anymore at the same time my regulator fell out again so I shot to the top.

Bring this epic tale full circle. My graduation gift from high school was a seiko chronograph and it required to be winded. It fell off when I shot to the top. Never did find it.

No, I'm not a very good swimmer so no diving. I also don't like swimming in water where I can't see my toes (been spoiled in that way). The boat is in fresh water, so there are no barnacles, but I do have a diver clean the bottom quarterly. I don't get in the water in our marina - gets nasty, there are snakes, and there is always the risk of stray electrical current.

Tragic that you lost the watch. But, my God, why would you ever think is was a good idea to take dive lessons in Mexico?

Don't feel bad, I've heard lots of stories about bad diving experiences on Mexico. I worked with a guy that went diving in Cozumel once. When he and his dive partner surfaced, the boat was no where to be seen. Seems the operator did not count heads before deciding to head in. They floated for about two hours drifting towards Cuba before they were picked up by a different boat that happened upon them.

38mm is my LARGEST watch. The rectangular ones are generally less than 25mm wide by maybe 30-35mm long. Round ones generally under 35mm. On vintage watch forums, every couple weeks a noob will post "I love the look of vintage watches, but they're so SMALL! They look girly!", and I always like to point out that the guys who won WWII and built the modern world did it wearing those 'girly' watches.

Another thing - large watches really, really need to be shockproof, because you're always clonking them on things like door jambs and such.

You can find a professional who will do that Hamilton for < $200 including new strap and all. But you might have to be willing to send it by mail.

My left leg, both the foot and the knee, track straight, but my right leg tries to turn toe out/knee out. So I do the opposite of big john and angle my right cleat toe-IN, which makes the right leg behave.

Yes. This was in the days when computers were still unusual and the dive was guided. Maybe I did have a watch on... Can't remember.

Fresh water marinas are very scary, current-wise. We pay a diver too. The water in our slip is like a brown-green smoothie most of the time and I'm afraid of what's down there.

Interesting. I have found that I actually benefit from the narrowest Q Factor I can get. I was developing Gluteus Medius pain riding the Bianchi's FSA crank last fall, and switched to the Ritchey with 7410 Dura Ace and about the narrowest Q factor of any modern crankset and it went away. I can't be certain that is what caused and cured the problem, and as a card-carrying Scientist I should be tempted to confirm it, but I already ditched the FSA for new Centaur cranks.

Same with our water. Out in the open area of the lake, it's not so bad.

As for electrical current, I haven't heard of anyone getting hurt in our marina, but I know it's a real risk. Really bothers me when I see other people letting their kids swim around the docks. You wouldn't believe how many people have 110v extension cords running to their boats and hanging in the water instead of investing in proper shore power equipment.

Think Humphrey Bogart in "The African Queen".

The Q factor was never a consideration for me but I have found that a wide Q works for me. My issue was always toe out and knee pain if I tried to fight it. If not for the pedal adapters I would not be able to use clipless pedals. The exception being when I drilled cleat mounting holes up against the inside of the soles. Of course then my foot was hanging over the outside of the pedal which was probably a factor in snapping off three pedals before I started using the adapters.

I've never used flat pedals without clips and straps but I am thinking about trying them on the mtb. Maybe some of the wide ones with traction pins. Might give me more confidence on sketchy trails.
