Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes the one row side is the best. I’m sitting in one now about to head to Harrisburg.

Traveling from Albany, most of my flights first leg are on the Embraer or Bombardier.

Correct, though my knees are pretty dang robust for an old fart. It's the weights I do in the morning that make the after work trainer time a struggle.

Our race season is starting in April, so I have weights in the mix until the end of February, or so.

Has your lifting helped your short term power? I really wanted to join a gym in the early winter - my goals for the season included hitting 1500 at 3" and 1200 at 15" - but they were all shut down with the latest bump.

Right now I can't answer that, simply because I haven't tried.

I also do a thing called Tractor Pulls, which is aptly named.... 53x11 Sitting, at a stop, full gas for 20",1' rest x 10 Those have improved. Coming close to that magic 1K peak number. Close. But, weights.... And it's always at the end of a workout.

That was my goal last year, actually more to cure my general puniness so I could hope to hold onto a little snap into old age. I spent a few months just developing the core strength and skills required to do the damn squats with a little weight and then the pandemic hit, but I think it did help.

I'm getting a set of adjustable dumbbells today and will start doing squats, step-ups, lunges, etc. with that hope again. We'll see.

You should give Romanian deadlifts a shot with the dumbbells, really good for the posterior.

That's what I do. I put an old 'Ultra Race' tire that had been worn to flat in the middle, and put it on a spare 32 spoke Ultegra wheel, with a spare cassette I had. It doesn't slip on the drum, and so far it hasn't asploded on me.

My Mom smoked, about a pack a day of unfiltered Camels. It's a big part of why I never started. After cleaning the windows in her car and getting brown gunk on the paper towel... Yeesh!

trx cables work pretty well. Body weight, but work your core really well. I use them in my hotel rooms.

Seconds, but I volunteer WhyFi to try for 3 minutes anyways.

Actually, what I'd really love to see is him do 1200W for 15 minutes

That's the plan! I have done deadlifts for years, but avoided squats out of fear.

I was actually quite surprised on my first (and only so far ) ride with the power meter that I hit 840W 1" and 813W 3".

I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it was certainly less than that.

I finally tried Erg mode for a workout on Zwift. I forget who described it as "Merciless", but, yeah. I was just doing the "SST Short". It really IS merciless! I realized when I'd done this workout with my dumb trainer and Zpower, I was catching little bits of rest, fluctuating around the target power. When I overshot it, I'd lighten up a bit for a couple seconds, then push back up again, and that little bit of rest makes a huge difference. In Erg mode, the power chases you, so if I tried to lighten up I'd just be pushing as hard, but at a lower cadence. Nowhere to catch a second of rest! I'm going to have to build up to that.

I stopped early, and just rode around the Volcano in Watopia 5 times, each time beating the previous time, except the last time I used as a cool down. That's more my style, but I think I need the structured workouts to be part of my riding this winter. I want to go farther and faster next summer.

So I've heard. I have been getting by with the ab wheel, floor exercises, and some resistance bands.

I worked my way up to the SST Medium, a great workout, but found that a group ride in the SST or threshold range is just as good a workout and MUCH easier on the brain. These days I tend to reserve the erg for the ≥ VO2max intervals and ≤ Z2.
