you're able to judge someone's worth based on an accident?

I'm madder at the DA who didn't charge him with at least Vehicular Homicide. The kid may have just made a horrible mistake, but the punishment doesn't fit the crime. The kid didn't mean to kill him, but his inattention took a human life. Careless driving undervalues sydney's life. I only hope that the news, now that it's on CNN and the radio here, makes someone pay attention. sydney deserves that at least.

I am of two minds with respect to the terrible circumstances. Probably 60 percent of me pulls my hair out and asks what kind of a world this is where we are raising young humans in such a way that they spend their time text messaging while (more or less) driving. Awful, awful. The remaining forty percent of me remembers that I, with my crew, did some things at the age of 17 that could have gotten some people killed. We were lucky and I am so thankful we were lucky.

When will governments step up to the plate, and ban cell phones, and all these other electronic devices for drivers? I guess that telecommunication money is just too big for the greedy dirt-bags to pass up. There have been plenty of studies that show the obvious danger. Now, more lives are horribly impacted, and one more life is gone.
RIP sydney.

I just put together a petition to send to Congress and to the Council of Mayors. If you can, please sign it, and distribute it around the different forums so we can get a big list of people supporting this- we need to stop people from using cell phones and their mobile devices while driving: https://www.petitiononline.com/7474355/petition.html
When I drive, I will NOT talk to people on the phone. My brother calls me, and the last time he called me while I was driving, I picked up the phone and screamed at him to stop calling me because I was trying to focus on driving. And whenever I use a cell phone, I pull over to the side of the road or stop at a gas station and make my calls. I know I can get really distracted while driving. It doesn't take much for me to get distracted, so I don't let anything distract me at all. I like to put all my concentration on driving safely.

James "Jim" R. Price of Littleton, Colo., was taken from us on Nov. 25, 2005, at the age of 63. Jim was born Feb. 1, 1942, in Fairmont, W.Va., to James W. and Margaret Stealey Price. He grew up in Mannington, W.Va., where he graduated from Mannington High School in 1960. He went on to attend the University of West Virginia where he graduated with a Master's Degree in Geology in 1966. He married Shirley Garner that same year. His field took him to Utah, Colorado and Texas. He retired as a Senior Geologist at the age of 55 when he became a consultant.
Jim and Shirley retired to Colorado to actively pursue their hobbies of hiking, fishing, and camping. Jim also enjoyed hunting. His passion was cycling, including building and maintaining his extensive collection, in addition to helping others with theirs.
He was preceded in death by his father, James W. Price.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Kimberlee (James) Stevens, Jessica Price; three grandchildren, Jansen, Kyra and Kelby; his 90-year-old mother, Margaret Stealey Price; a brother, Tom Price of Ohio; a sister, Janet Cain of West Virginia; nieces, nephews and many friends.

I thought we were keeping this thread a tribute to sydney. If anyone wants to debate the issue of the driver and his crime, please start a new thread.

I saw the news story about this accident the day it happened. Hearing that a cyclist who seemed to be doing everything right was killed by a careless and stupid driver always troubles me, and the situation surrounding this one definitely outraged me. That was before I realized that I 'knew' the cyclist involved.
Today, I logged on to the forums for the first time in a few weeks. Learning that the cyclist involved was sydney deeply saddens me. I always enjoyed sydney's posts, and had more than a few very fun interactions with him.
To say Jim Price is a great loss to the cycling community would be an understatement.
RIP, Jim. Keep all those carpet smoking muppets up there in check for us, you hear?

One thing I would add is that perhaps you should cite some of the recent studies that show that drivers talking on cell phones have a higher accident rate than drunk drivers (google search will find these). It's always good to have hard statistics to back these things up!

God bless You, your Father and Family. I had been gone a month or so and just came back and it seemed so very quiet, I started a few threads and, there was no challange to my new found knowledge and no one was around to bust my butt. One of the reasons I worked hard to know my stuff is because your Father challenged me to get up off my duff and take it serious, there was no room for a half effort or mediocrity here, when you come to sydney's temple you'd had better paid attention to his lessons and, you'd had better studied your bike bible.

There have been several threads this week where I kept waiting for Sydney's post. A discussion of various types of steel tubing...certainly one of the tubes being discussed would have been "gas pipe". And, someone was considering buying one or two Schwinn Continentals...Schwinn's indestructable 38 pound H2 of a road bike. And, I know he would not have let that thread go unanswered.
In one of his later posts, I saw a list of the bikes he had...he certainly had an eye for the very best...
In reading a number of cycling books over the past decade, I noticed that a surprisingly high number of devoted cyclists die while riding. Some were struck by motor vehicles. Others fell in a bike crash. Others dead of a heart attack, or stroke, hit by a falling tree, or flipped by broken pavement...some at young ages, some at very old ages.
And, what is the alternative? We could hide in our living rooms, safe on our sofa. But, on the average, a devoted couch potato probably has a shorter life than the folks who ride their bikes ten or twenty hours a week. And, there is no way a couch potato could be enjoying life as much as an avid cyclist.
If Sydney had owned a crystal ball, and known how his life would end, I doubt he would have changed a thing...he seems to have been a Frank Sinatra sort of guy...he lived life HIS way.

Just like motorcyclists, those of us who ride bicycles take a tremendous risk. A man I met one evening on the Michigander was killed by a car the next day. While nothing will change the risks assosiated with riding 2 wheeled devices, there is no reason for the added danger of drivers with phones. That is why I will be linking to this petition on my sig line in the other forums I am a member of.
Very few people know when their time will be up. I personaly would rather die having fun than die slowly a nursing home like my grandma. Sydney died doing what he loved, and for that I think we can all be happy for him.
