I forgot about that. Yes, she does. And now that I'm lifting weights, she likes my buff upper body. It's curvy now, but it's not yet bulky or strong. I just LOOK strong.

For fitness and good health. And I love the outdoors.
I'm also lucky because I get to commute with a friend. Makes the ride much more enjoyable.

Did we mention getting to see all the beautiful and buff people exercising and enjoying life in beautiful scenery? That's not why I started, but it keeps me going.

Riding by a gas station and flipping a mental finger at people flying occupied aircraft into occupied buildings. And imagining their heads assplode at the sight of MAWIL getting from A to B by the force of bad eating habits.....

All of the above. No absolute one reason.
Plus I like to show off and brag that I'm able to go all over the place without a car.

I am surprised that "All of the above is not a choice."
I can not think of one single choice as they are all related to each other.

Two fold reason.
1) I love it.
2) It's great exercise AND it doesn't take any extra time to do it.
My commute isn't very far. And with the traffic lights my car gets stuck at vs the side streets and paths behind buildings I can use as shortcuts on the bike, it takes me about 3 minutes longer to ride than it does to drive. So basically the same.
So I end up getting exercise without adding any extra time to my day like I'd need to if I went to the gym or something, since I'm going to spend that time commuting no matter what.
And I don't get bored with riding by doing it regularly so when I still want to take a long leisure ride I'm still up for it, AND in much better shape than friends I'd go trail riding with you ride once a month.

...And taking any other train, bus, taxi, and driving your car into the city. The only public transpo that I think doesn't suck is the ferry. But its expensive. It was hefty $10 ($9 plus $1 for the bike) each way for the NY Waterway from Weehawken.

As someone who has had a DUI and is currently a medical marijuana patient, the proverbial sword of Damocles hanging over my head when getting pulled over for any type of nit picky reason is enough to keep me commuting by bicycle.

I agree, although the LIRR isn't too bad, just very expensive. And even when it is crowded, you aren't physically pressed up against smelly, sniveling, sweating, disgusting strangers like you are on a packed subway car.

1. Because I can. I have a job close enough and enough income to live and work next to the sea.
2. Because of the environment.
3. So I can give the proverbial middle finger to those stuck in traffic.

how cute young man.
Yes, that says commute from Ebbsfleet to central London (£5200 / yearly ticket) in 18 minutes.
(Usually that's between $7500 and $10000 for a train ticket for a year-long 18-minute ticket.)
That's nearly 15% of one's pre-tax salary (and probably between 20 and 25% of post-tax salary) in London.

I like to ride my bike. The rest of those things are nice fringe benefits.

No one reason
I checked the "health" box, but I have to admit that's just my justification for choosing to commute to work by bike. I park in a free train station lot just under 10 miles from the office, switch to the bike, ride in to work (in Charlotte, NC), take a shower in the office building fitness center, change clothes and take the elevator to the office. I change to bike clothes in the office when I am done for the day, get on the bike in the office parking garage, and ride back to the parking lot. It takes longer than driving, but as mentioned above, I regard it as "free miles." And it's definitely a choice that depends on other things I have to do and my mood.

Not necessarily. Public transit runs worse in the US than in Europe because we put so much emphasis on low fares and low subsidies. When you see the true cost of mass transit, you may still wish to pay for it privately or publicly. I would. In my view, it's a good thing for society, either way.

To save $$$.
It costs me ~$3.50 in gas to get to & from work.
It costs me $90/month to park once I get there. Divided by~18 work days/month, that's $5.00/day.
Total cost to drive to work $8.50/day or ~$150/month + wear & tear on the car + time sitting in traffic.
If I bike, I save $$$, get exercise and start my day in a much more productive mode. Plus....I get to eat all of the candy I want without it ruining my waistline. Bonus!
