Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Less than either of us are dealing with now.
That's the way our house was, 6 steps one way and 7 the other. When my wife and I crashed our tandem, she had 8 broken bones including 3 pelvis fractures and couldn't negotiate steps hardly at all and I was in the hospital for two weeks with 13 fractures of my own so she had to have people come in to do laundry in the basement for her. Even when I got out of the hospital, I could go up and down stairs but couldn't carry anything so I would throw the laundry down the stairs and then throw them back up when done.

That's when I decided that it was time to go all one level including laundry with a basement for storage and utilities. Good thing after my wife's fall last september incurring more pelvic and spine fractures.

Mmm mmm mmm! That must have been some crash and how horrible to have the two of you suffering like that at the same time.

My poor, stoical, wife has bad osteoarthritis in the hips and knees and won't even open the discussion of joint replacement. Definitely thinking about ways of making her life easier.

It was hard on us but we had two bike clubs and a couple bridge clubs bringing us food and taking us to doctors and such. My wife couldn't drive for 5 weeks and I couldn't for 6 so we had to rely on friends a lot. Still, having to rely on each other most of the hours in a day had its own rewards.

Sorry for your wife. Not good to be in pain. ;(

I haven't ridden in two days, and my knees are finally pain free. Two of my three sisters are coming in this afternoon, for a week, so I hope to be pain free throughout. I'm finding myself with no desire to get on the bike, due to the resulting knee issues. It could be a nice break, during which I fall completely out of shape.

My dog with the insulinoma had surgery and now has diabetes, ie pre-op he had too little blood sugar and now has too much. We don't usually see that, although it happens, hopefully is temporary. The pathology on the mass in his pancreas came back as definite insulinoma, and the mass in his spleen came back as benign. So he really does/did have 3 seperate problems- post traumatic epilepsy, insulinoma and benign splenic mass.

Just two days ago I saw another dog with seizures and low blood sugar. Insulin level pending but I think I might have two insulinoma cases in two weeks.

More common in dogs than humans, though, right?

Endocrine surgery post-ops are tricky, if I remember my nights of dealing pituitary adenoma surgery patients after trans-sphenoidal surgery.

I don't know much about people. We see them regularly in dogs, maybe 0-4 per year.

Good Lord, it’s nuking out there! I had real trouble controlling the bike in some of the gusts on the way home and tomorrow’s supposed to be worse. Might be a fake miles day, except I have to work late and it sucks to come home hungry, tired and hypo-ethanolemic and get on the trainer.

We had a very windy ride today. But the sun was shining and temps above freezing so all good. The elder statesman of our little group turned 74 today.

My local LBS bike shop announced that they are now an Allied dealer. I'm sure that @Dan333SP will approve. Can't wait to see one in the carbon flesh, myself.

My lube I ordered over the weekend came in 1 day early.

I hope my jacket also arrives 1 day early so I can use it on Friday in the frigid temperatures.

More to point is an inquiry about both your recoveries are going, and especially hers after the second fall.

Strange as it might seem, I do have thoughts about how you both might be now 2018 has moved into memory as not being anywhere near a great year for some of the people I know of.

She's doing better. She has lingering back trouble and hand swelling for which she sees a specialist about in a week.

Worse than the injuries is that a woman who rode 3,000-5,000 miles a year for 37 seasons is afraid to go near a bicycle for fear of falling. I hope she changes her mind because I hate to see her give up a life she once loved.

In your case, your recovery has been miraculous. Hoping for a happy and healthy new year for all.

Modern shipping is pretty crazy. I had a problem with a lens that I'd recently purchased (the Zeiss 35/1.4) and the seller sent a return label (they're going to swap it for me, provided they can replicate the problem [which shouldn't be an issue]). I packed up the lens and dropped it off at a UPS store yesterday at about 4pm. It was in the hands of the seller in Massachusetts by 7am this morning.

I was surprised that the return service was Next Day Air, but this company's bread and butter is lens rentals, so moving product quickly is probably pretty important to them.

Speaking of my problem child lens, here's a photo dump of some of the trip pics, many of which were taken with the ailing lens. Apologies for bandwidth consumption for those on your mobile networks.
