Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I use Boulder as my example, which is bike friendly and very fit. My office is downtown at a popular bike intersection, so I get to watch all the bike traffic come through. In the last year, there has been a huge rise in ebike use. Parents with kids that can now get up the hill, people with those bigger utility ebikes, and people just riding. They have become a car alternative and a bike that goes fast without effort is fun to ride. People are also riding eskateboards and other emotored stuff.

I don't see those people then going out and riding their pedal bike. They will stay fit, but not with a bike anymore. Boulder will always have its racers and rec riders, but not in the same numbers. I just got an email from BMC about their ebike. It's how the bike industry is evolving.

Given Pocono's recent history, I won't miss that track at all. Too many bad memories.

It'll be interesting to see the landscape in five years. Most of the bike shops will be gone, unless they move more and more towards ebikes. As that technology gets better and cheaper, everyone will want assist. No one will want to actually ride a bike except for us old farts.
I hope there's backlash in the form of a penny farthing fad.

Anyone know a good source for 3000mm 12 gauge spokes?

Same here in Philly. My hipster next door neighbor with a bull horn Specialized conversion fixie recently got an eBike. Last I knew he worked in the same building as I do, which is less than a two mile commute. But maybe he got a different job farther away because I saw him this morning riding a different route than usual. And every week I see more and more eskateboards and scooters.

And with that....23,000 to me!

Anyone tried bibs from "The Black Bibs"? I'm on a mission to find bibs that are less than $100 that are durable and comfy, but also a good tight race fit. These look good-

https://www.theblackbibs.com/shop/navybibs

I got myself a pair of Gore bibs off Amazon last week and I actually really like them, they're now in my rotation, but these are even cheaper so wondering if they're worth it.

As the tech gets better, will there be an ewand to check bikes at your Cat 4 start? Turn your old Powertap internals into some hub assist. People have to be doing stuff like that.

That site is a find, if the stuff is any good. I don’t even wear bibs, even though I’m a serious cyclist, and this shorts are cheap.

Well, I don't race but I have them- the women's version (in black)- and like them. The only negative I will say is that the padding is just a little excessive.
Ooh, I see they have bib knickers now...and I got an email from Cyclology yesterday about new jerseys. Darn it, I might buy some new stuff now.

My neighbor is having a procedure done at the hospital and asked us to take his dog out for a walk. We did, and it was almost as much fun as a bike ride. Dog’s name is Rusty.

Cycling in popular culture notes:

There's a Keirin race snippet in the fake video game that appears in the new Hot Chip video!

Quite a bit of cycling (even some singlespeed gravel grinding!) in the Finnish flick "Heavy Trip" Must see TV if you've got Amazon Prime. Hilarious, and rather light-hearted for Scandinavian cinema.

I’ve ridden up Mt Rose Hwy from the Reno side. There’s also a couple of great mtb trails that come off Mt Rose Hwy.

Glad you’re liking the place. We’ll be in Tahoe in a few weeks.

We bought an EOY unit at Highlands Inn, so now we have a week every year in Tahoe and a week EOY in Carmel.

I’m back 99% from my crash and have been riding some. Fat and out of shape but not as bad as I’d expected.

The recovery was pretty interesting. Lots of time to think and rethink.

I bought some cold weather bib knickers from them last winter. Comfort-wise I have no complaints. With proper layering they work down into the 30s.

Durability-wise, I haven't worn them enough to say. I used to ride all winter in all conditions, but every year I get less and less motivated to go outside when the weather is crap, especially now that zwift exists. But I wore them a handful of times and had no issues.

At the price, I figured it was a low risk. No complaints.
