I've recently discovered how difficult it is to ride intervals well. Surprising just how fast my heart rate drops with even the slightest decrease in incline. I tried some 20' Z3 intervals yesterday and with the longer length I also found myself getting distracted and not paying attention to what I was doing.

So I clicked the family text thread when I got back from my ride to discover that my uncle (who was in poor health to start with) is in the hospital with pneumonia in both lungs. Again, because it happened last year as well.

I tried some intervals yesterday and found I suck at maintaining consistent power. It was also super windy, which made it twice as hard. What was most interesting is intervals.icu showed a drop in overall fitness after a somewhat hard-ish effort. So confused. My knee is killing me today, I need a fit but can't get one because of COVID. I'm 99.999999% certain it's cleat float and placement, but would like a pro to truly dial me in. Everything else feels great.

Yes, that's what it is.
I find outdoor efforts much easier than indoor. I think it's mainly the richer sensory feedback. Descents are obviously an issue, but I can avoid the big ones and bring up the mean power by pushing it on the uphills. I'm sure purists would be aghast, but it has real-world validity.

Also, around here they like to spread a layer of gravel over the paved country roads, I guess so that as it breaks down it naturally fills in the depressions. Going way faster than I usually do on these corners is a bit frightening since the gravel likes to hang out there

The problem with COVID is it's too serious of an illness for the powers-that-be to say "you're on your own" (like influenza), but it's not serious enough to make a wide swath of the population fearful of catching it. So we're stuck in no-man's land from a public health standpoint.

I started doing intervals in college x-c. We went to the track and did the distance at a pace we thought would get us through the set and the coach would occasionally tell us to speed it up or slow it down. I think it's almost impossible to use a smoothed, delayed, data stream, like power, for tight feedback. I just go and glance at the numbers occasionally as a check. I think you get pretty good at estimating the target effort and you put in a better performance if you're not constantly trying to adjust your pace.
