Replacement brake cables, casing and adjuster.

Hi,

I am new to cycling, just dug out my 20 year old giant bike and have been working at getting it roadworthy, shifters are now working and I've got a Shimano MTB Optislick Shift Cable Set in white on the way as the outer casing has split, so currently the rear gears only shift due to gaffer tape holding it together.

I'm now looking at getting replacement brake cables and outer casing as they look like they need replacing, I was hoping to get a matching set to the above for the brake cables but shimano only seem to do one or two sets and in black for MTB. What's stopping me use something along the lines of "Shimano Cable SIL-TEC road brake set" in white or any other suggestions?

Additionally the ring on the brake adjuster has crossed the thread somehow and is stuck so I think I need to replace that. Looks like where the threaded bit has been screwed into the barrel is a bit messy too, so I think something with a new clean thread would help there too, any suggestions?

Thanks all!

Any MTB brake cable set will work. Does not need to be Shimano.

My go-to is Jagwire Mountain Pro. It is compression-less. Makes a big difference if you are running full length housing, less so if you are not.

I don't understand what threaded ring you are talking about. The one on the lever? Kinda screwed if you cross-threaded it. I guess you could re-tap it, but brake levers are pretty cheap.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the Jagwire.

It's the ring which goes round the adjuster. The one on the lever looks a bit messed up but it still screws in and out there so I think that'll be ok. My brake levers are combined with the shifters so I'd like to avoid having to replace them if possible!

Ah, got it.

If you can’t fix the adjuster on the lever, you could use an in-line adjuster instead. Something like this:

You won't be able to use road brake cables on a mountain bike as the "ball" end of the cables are different shapes. You can use any housing if you want to have white.
