Garmin 510 yea or nay ...

I like my 810. If you don't need actual maps, 510 should be good.
The only thing is, the 510/810 are a little hard to read in certain conditions. My old 500 was much harder to navigate pages, but easier to read during the day.

Yea. Definitely does the trick... Good battery life, easy to swipe pages while riding... Visibility is fine for me... Etc..

Main reason for a 510 over the 500 is the automatic phone upload and Live Tracking. My 510 gets connected to the computer almost never. If you don't plan to use those features a 500 is fine.

got the 510 and very happy with the battery life and accuracy. would like to be able
to upload to strava via iphone vs uploading to strava via desktop but i don't think it's possible. can only upload to other smart phones, not iphones. anyone uploading 510 rides to strava via iphones?

I haven't ridden the 510 but some aren't in love with the display of the 510. I have a 500 and will say the display of the 500 is pretty awful which is sad because its such a great bike computer otherwise. When Garmin comes out with a 510/500 with a strong font rivaling many cheap computers on the market like Cateye with much less functionality, that can be seen in various light without strain, I will upgrade.

510 uploads to the iPhone immediately when you save your ride on the 510 (if you are paired and have Garmin Connect App installed). Go to your Strava Account on the desktop and under Upload/devices set up a direct sync with your Garmin Connect account. Next time you save your ride on the 510, your ride will show in Strava almost instantly. No desktop required.
the garmin connect account but i rarely use that account to track rides. the old iphone 4 still does everything i need save this one thing. part of me wishes the phone
would meet with an untimely disaster so i'd be forced to upgrade.

The 510 is a bit heavier and pricier than the 500, but it also has several nice upgraded features for the display and smartphone connectivity to consider. I've had the 500 for several years, but would consider the 510 if I needed to replace.

Love mine. Perfect size and feature set, IMHO. I've had it a little over a year.
FWIW, when you get one, go ahead and use the tether they include. On the off chance you don't, they'll replace an out of warranty 510 for $80. Ask me how I know!

Nay. I opted for the Touring Plus, couldn't be happier. Maybe not all the training features of the 500/510, but I gladly traded those for the mapping. Display is great.

I've been very happy with the 510 having purchased it back in April. The simplified "map" screen is all I need especially when you upload the courses. The Turn alerts have saved me on a few organized rides where I was unfamiliar with the route. I had read in the Garmin forums about many issues, especially with Live Track, but experienced none of those problems. My wife also appreciates the Live Track feature. So "yea" for me.

My 500 is still fine. I have to plug it in to charge it so it might as well get plugged in to the computer. I'm not sure the features of the 510 are worth the extra $. A friend purchased a used 705 (700?) on Amazon for $200. I think it might have been a refurb with warranty.

I have a 500 and really like it. The size is great, the display was a little hard to read but I recently picked up some Tifosi reader sunglasses with the little magnifying lenses on the bottom third of the lens, now reading the 500 is really easy. Man I love those sunglasses.

510 reporting in. I was having some issues with my 510 with avg speeds when using .tcx courses. It would show my speeds unusually slow as I was riding but would correct upon upload. THEN I couldn't even upload. The garmin would not be recognized by my computer, or phone (which really sucked because I had just done a ride I was really proud of). After an hour on the phone with tech support I guess I got a bad garmin and other instances similar to mine had happened a few other times. Free replacement and the NEW 510 is perfect, and no more issues with speeds using tcx courses.
Edit:
I also have it synced with my iPhone 4 to garmin connect to upload to strava. It's possible, but damn does it take awhile.
