Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fitting a 23mm tire on rims that came with 28mm tires**********

Hi, My road bike came with 700c 28mm and there not slicks. Do you think I can fit 25mm or better yet 23mm tires on rims that originally came with 28mm tires?

I hope I dont have to buy new rims........

Thanks

Do your rims say their size. For example my cross bike came with 700x33 tires but the rim size was 622x17. If you know the rim size there are charts that tell you what size tires it can handle. Sheldon Browns site has a chart like the one I mentioned.

Got pics. 28mm to 23mm ain't much of a change, so will probably work. I'd just roll 25s or 26s personally.

I can take some tomorrow. But I have a picture of the rear calliper and it shows the tire a bit. What do you need more specifically? A picture of the whole wheel itself?

I know its not a huge difference going down to 23mm, but Im hoping that thinner tires and a higher psi, like maybe 100-120 psi instead 80 currently, and slicks instead of sort of hybrid will roll much better? what do you think?

Any chance that you can find out by looking up your bicycles specifications online. Like through the brands website? Or at the very least you could go to the lbs and have them tell you what size rim you have and also what sizes of tires it will work with.

Pic of rim, instead of tire, would be better, like if you laid down on the floor and aimed camera up at brake caliper.

Do the rims have stickers indicating make and model on 'em?

I took one, let me know if you need a better one.....The bike is not that great, its a ccm presto so the rim basically just has a sticker saying ccm..

The bike is a ccm, so I tried to find the official ccm website for bikes and no luck. I keep getting websites for motor bikes mostly. Ill keep checking thou.

I asked a local bike shop and they said 25mm would fit but 23mm there not sure, they would have to try it. However, I wanted to buy tires online instead, so im not sure.

Just a heads up, since you live in the states. Im pretty sure the specifications of this bike are exactly the same as the GMC Denali....

  • Rims: Vitesse Alloy black 700CX14GX36H
  • Tires: Kenda Black With Grey Band 700X28C

This is for the Denali

The model is a 'ccm presto' and the year of make ill have to get back to you when I find it.

What you need to know is the width of the rims.

There is a very strong possibility that a 23c will be fine. To spec a rim on a bike with those caliper that wouldn't accept a 23c tires means it would accept a 38c tire which wouldn't fit under the calipers. That would be incredibly stoopid.

Have another look at the rim and see if you can't find some tiny numbers etched in that stat 622 x ??. It's the second set of numbers that will matter to you.

There's like a 2% chance you won't be able to get it to work at all (note, I didn't say well, I said at all). There is also a significantly higher probability of failure if you use the stock tubes. Buy new tubes.

yea i could do that, I may be leaning towards 25mm instead to save me the trouble or new rims or whatever. But why you say 28mm will ride better? wouldnt 25mm or 23mm slicks with a higher psi ride better for speed and performance?

Why would you want to put 23s on the bike when you can get 25s?

Measure the rim diameter. Inner size wall to wall.

that cannot be valid in 2012 when we have rims like the hed c2 and velocity a23, which are 23 and 21 mm wide and they can be used with 23s no problem.

Rolls better and has smoother ride. You should check the technical section of velonews.com

yea you seem to not be the only one that says that. But Iv also read 23's will roll better. But I guess it wont make that much of a difference with 25's or 23's.

im not even sure if ill notice a difference with my current 28's that are not slicks vs 25's slicks?

Thanks for correction. Didn't know that.

Have you got any more up-to-date link? Or are those some exotic rims while the table still being "the rule of thumb"?

Rolling? Fatter tyres will bump on bad pavement less and perhaps even roll better. Thinner tyres hold higher pressure (so might provide less rolling resistance) and will definitely provide less air drag. But nothing revolutionary. What you WILL notice is less weight (and thus less inertia), so you will get up to speed more easily, bike might feel a bit lighter, nippier.

If you ride on paved roads, slick tyres will give better traction and less rolling resistance than the same thickness tyres with thread.

23 are more sensitive to bad pavement, potholes etc than 25. 28 are even more durable. With 23s you will have to be careful not to damage rims on potholes.

I ride 37 mm tyres on commuter bicycle and 23 mm tyres on road bike. On 37 mm tyres, I have more problems accelerating, it is harder, but I don't even blink if I hit a big pothole in the dark on the way home.

P.S. You CAN drink and drive with fat tyres!

Hey thanks a lot for the detailed response. Basically what I was looking for.

Maybe ill just stick with my current tires for now. one last thing, is there any danger in pumping the max air pressure on a tire. Mine says 85 psi, can I put it to 85? and if I could put it to 85 can you also pump a little more than 85 psi? Are there any risk involved in doing that?
