I just read about Diana Nyad's swim from Cuba to Key West.
She swam 110 miles and was in the water for 53 hours. At one point she swallowed so much salt water that she kept vomiting.
And she is 64 years young.
Dang it...that's one tough bird...er, I mean one tough fish.

She's incredible. The story isn't getting nearly the respect it deserves. There was a time when this would have been huge news (remember Marilyn Bell swimming the English Channel?).

Swimming open ocean is extremely difficult. That she kept swallowing water in those rough seas doesn't surprise me. That someone could puke and yet keep swimming, however, does.

I do that every weekend and I'm 83, and I swim in my own vomit twice as long. I also handfish Marlin while I'm talking to Fidel over the ham radio strapped to my back.

You have to give her major props for persevering until she succeeded.
A year and a half ago, there was one bloke who was trying to cycle around the world. As he passed through our fair state of Arkansas, a yokel in a truck ran over his bike.
His back was injured, his pace was broken so he dropped out of contention for the prize he was competing for, but he went on and completed the ride around the world.
Now he is swimming the length of Britain, from Land's End to John O' Groats.

I saw her on the news this AM.
I am flat in awe of her accomplishment.
Forget for a moment the physical punishment of swimming that far and for that long a time.
The mental toughness that must have required is what knocks me over.
That and it's her fifth try at this and the fourth try in her 60's
Say it with me.
All Hail Diana Nyad!
Jeff, still fat
P.S. I guess she really proved Calvin Coolidge was right...
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

The woman amazes me. She was ravaged by box jellyfish in the past, so she wore a tight latex mask. It did not look comfortable.

Very few of us come anywhere near close to achieving our potential. For whatever reasons, because of the box we put ourselves in or the box society puts us in, because we're comfortable, because we're afraid. Every once in a while someone shows us what we are capable of doing. Bravo to her, for reminding us what humans can do.

I had to laugh at her response to a friend asking her what she thinks about while she's on these marathon swims, wondering if she contemplates the wonders of the sea, the circle of life, the human condition...
She responded that she amused herself by singing (in her head obviously) the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies 2000 times!!

I'm glad she finally made it after multiple failed attempts, due to bad luck with currents and jellyfish stings. I saw her earlier this year at a screening of the documentary of her previous attempts ("The Other Shore"). At that time it was not clear that she would be able to put together a crew and support for another attempt. So, congratulations, Diana!
