My (Or My Wife's ?) "New" Peugeot PSVN
With your help over in the "Appraisal" forum, I bought a 1982 Peugeot PSVN 10 off CL.
I was looking for a "fast commuter", meaning a bicycle that will get me and a messenger bag to work and back quickly and with style, and can reasonably be left locked up in the parking garage. Think an affordable Gentleman's Express.
However, my wife likes it, so it is currently quite possible this PSVN will become her road bike - unless I find her a bike she likes better. Celeste Bianchi?
The bike is, I think, in fairly original condition. Based on this 1982 brochure
https://mysite.verizon.net/imagelib/s...kb&title=PSV10
The rear dérailleur is not right, so I will look for a Simplex to replace the long-cage Shimano. The rims are Ambrosio and Araya, not Mavic. I'm not sure about the hubs. The brake hoods are Diacompe, even though the brake levers and calipers are the correct Weimann. The toe clips are not original, I don't think the pedals are either. That's it for "wrong parts", that I can see. Do you see any others?
I've ridden it about 1/2 hour so far. The headset is slightly loose, the front derailleur needs adjustment, the adjusting screws at the left rear dropout is badly bent, the front wheel should be trued. Not too bad. I will fix these and overhaul the bearings, etc, but first need to buy some bike tools. I have lots of tools but they are more for auto work.
Cosmetically I think it might be a 7 out of 10, but I am new to C&V bikes so what do I know. Very few paint chips except on the chain stay, decals almost all complete, shiny bits are shiny.
The problems are a few small pricks of rust, like at the frame vent holes on the rear brake bridge and the leading edge of the chromed fork blades, some discolored spots at the head tube lug, scrapes on the right side top tube decal ("Made In France") and on the other side, the last letter in "Brase A Main" is partly missing. And - arrgh - a rust spot at the cable guide brazed on the top tube. Right there staring at me.
Any suggestions on how to deal with these issues? What do you do? I'm not trying to "restore" the bike, just make it nice and keep it nice.
This was a California bike. The second owner lived in Seattle before recently moving to Portland. I'm the third owner.
After a little cleanup.
Don't hate me, but I'm going to look for fluoresecent orange bar tape. For visibility and safety in traffic.
See the discolored spot on the head tube lug?
Should the crank be a higher polish? I wasn't sure what to do to it.
In search of Simplex . . .
This bums me out. What rust neutralizer to use? Fortunately I think pearl white touch up paint shouldn't be hard to find? Where would you look?
The worst decal.
Bike is a SoCal machine. "Dad's Bike Barn", Redondo Beach.
You can see more spots of head tube lug discoloration.

I never used it yet, but Oxalic Acid (wood bleach is a popular method used by C&Vers to remove rust from frames. It's supposed to work reall well, but not sure what it might do to paint. For the chromed fork, spray it with WD40 and rub crumpled aluminum foil right over the small spots of rust. I've tried this myself on components and the fork on my own PSV and it removes the rust like magic., specially the small freckles of rust that also started to form on my fork. There are lots of threads in the forum regarding this. Try the search box for more tips. As soon as you get the rust off on those small painted corners of your frame. seal the metal up quickly with some pearl white touch up paint you can easily buy at car parts stores. I'm sure someone here will chime in on the proper use of Oxalic Acid. You might have to buy a small disposable plastic tub or kiddie pool to dip and soak the frame in the acid.
Good thing is the rust looks very minor and easy enough to arrest. You got the bike just in time before it got any worse.

Bravo-nice score. I'd just find a short cage rdr (looks like it fits a shimano ok) like a 105-something easily attainable. The simplex rdr threads through the back-the hanger may have been modified. On the subject of locking: IMO peeps will steal anything-ugly or pretty! Hope to see the progress.

If the hanger has been modified for the Shimano derailleur, would it still accept a Simplex derailleur? The threads and stop notch would be superfluous but they wouldn't interfere, or would they?

Great old bicycle and you must be very happy with it. And, for what it is worth, I really need an identical front derailleur for my Super Competition...
There is one on Ebay right now but I will hold off since it is a bit pricey.
