Not sure how you broke a connex link unless you didn't secure it properly. I've been running them for over 15yrs and have had zero issues.

The fixed pin broke out of one of the plates, so I had one plate with two pins affixed to it, and one plate with none. Replaced it with one of my backup KMC links, and never looked back.
Fluke? Probably. But bad enough that I'm not dropping $27 on another one-- much less $70 on a chain that includes the link. I get my spare quick-links for around $5 each, and every $15 PC1110 comes with one.

If you can't get mineral spirits because of local regulations, look into stove fuel (Coleman or other). That is similar to mineral spirits but has more aromatics in it so its flash point is a little lower. Use nitrile gloves with either but especially if you are using Coleman fuel. And, of course, use it in a well ventilated area...aka outside.

Anyone try Marvel Mystery Oil or SeaFoam to clean their chain? Or even combining the two in a 50/50 mixture?

I just use a small stiff nylon brush and some WPL (Whistler Performance Lubricants) bio-solvent degreaser. Cuts down all grime and grease from my cassette and chain and makes it all look brand new again.

hains are cheap, life is short - Paper towel with a bit of WD40 or other penetrating oil sprayed on it works well enough. I get over 5000 miles out of a chain minimum with this approach. Taking it off the bike and cleaning isn't worth my time when i'm already getting almost a year's riding out of a $30 part.
