Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I ran into something unexpected while off work for vacation and we had a warm spell of weather. Nobody seemed to be riding an organized ride that week, not enough folks off work.

I posted up on the club FB page asking if anyone would go. Metric century, nothing fast, just getting outdoors. It's not a thing to me if it's a guy or girl. But only one girl said they'd go. Whatever. I didn't think anything of it. I'm having my coffee before riding and she pulls up and starts stretching in a rather provocative way while facing me and talking to me. They've never done this before the large group ride. I just ignored it and enjoyed my time in the good weather. The ride was fine. They'e a competent rider, and I had company and safety in numbers. Kept it "professional".

I'm sure though a casual observer or the wife probably would have thought "mhhmmm buddy" at the whole pre-ride stretching routine.

Am I absolved?

About running lights. This was not on a bike, I worked on a AF base. Going home about 2 am I got to a light and it wouldn't turn green, so I turned left on red. The guard at the base entrance/exit about 150 yard away stopped me and ticketed me. I had to go to federal court twice, once on the date printed on the ticket to get a court date, then court. Felt pretty ashamed, as the cases before mine were quite serious. I argued my case as not being careless as at 2 am I could see all directions, and there was absolutely no traffic. Judge agreed and reduced the $25 fine to a penny. But I soon found out there was a $25 court fee, so the moral victory cost me a penny.

Moral: Don't run red lights on federal property.

Uh-uh. You don't get to claim that move. I've been doing "California Rolling Stops"(tm) for decades, both in my car and on my bike (just much more often when cycling

Geez, some of you act like peeing outside is a sin. Sometimes I do it at the edge of my very secluded backyard while I'm raking or mowing - it just feels good.

My old riding buddy was once riding to work and got cutoff and cursed out by a motorist. At the next red light, my friend caught up, removed the heavy bike lock and chain that he'd been wearing like a bandolier, and swung it around his head once or twice before smashing it into the car's fender and riding off. That's not a sin, either - it's street justice.

Nice fun thread. I think that most of my confessions might have to do with stuff that I did many years ago, but maybe not.

- Blew thru red lights, threading the needle so to speak, with approaching traffic
- Rode on the sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to move
- When I was much much younger, I swiped some winter gloves from a bike shop. Really lame...

I don't need to confess for peeing on someone else's property while out riding.

I have not blown through red lights or cut to the front of a line of traffic and then cut the light in 35 or more years. I find that when I start to act like a fool on the bike, weird stuff starts happening and I can immediately connect it to my behavior.

Years ago, when I was first getting into road biking, I wore a camelbak bladder hydration system. Probably my biggest cycling sin.

I took a Strava KOM by taking off my saddle bag, bottles, lights, and jersey (full pockets) along with a pit stop to empty out. In my defense it was 32 miles into a 45 mile ride and I kept my helmet on to retain some form of dignity. I would also like to thank GCN for giving me the idea in the first place.

I have not gotten out of the hammock today, except to feed and walk the dogs. I have a lingering injury keeping me off the bike. Doc says Monday.

I must confess I just purchased an older 853 Reynolds steel bike off ebay. My first steel bike in 30 years. I know I am going down a dark path that only the veterans of BF can understand.

- I did a TT while wearing a trisuit . Got a podium too. Felt very ashamed
- I have used brake rub as an excuse for getting dropped (it may even have been true)
- I have used "I bonked" as an excuse for getting dropped (it may even have been true)
- I have used "I am doing a Z2 day today" as an excuse for getting dropped (and it may even have been true)
- I have attacked riding buddies on what were supposed to be non-competitive rides
- I am considering putting a BTS bottle cage on my aero road bike - only the fact that i dont want a bottle being ejected on a group ride is stopping me
- I dont have the confidence to ride no-handed
- Unless i am doing structured intervals, i always try to chase down any rabbits i see ahead of me
- When overtaking someone, i always try to appear relaxed - no matter how much i am dying inside

I always my TT bike with deep section front and rear disc and dont consider it confession-worthy - it's a HED with a fairing, and it will last. Besides, i paid good $$$ for the whoosh whoosh.

I forgot one: snot rockets.

Sometimes, if there's a particularly egregious close-pass, I'll let 'er rip. I feel kind of bad about the perfectly executed snot rocket I ripped out...while in the throes of a really nasty sinus infection. Still, three feet is a good idea.

I regularly ride on the sidewalk when travelling on busy streets. I AM considerate of pedestrians.

I have yelled at motorists who stop after the stop sign of the stop sign forcing me to stand on the brakes (and in one case, crash into the side of their car). I DID learn to slow down and watch for approaching vehicles even if there is a stop sign. It HAS made me more aware of approaching bicyclists when approaching stop signs while driving.

I like my handlebar mirrors.

I have run stop signs. But not red lights. Where I ride, running red lights is suicide.
