This is why you need a kickstand

So the newspaper can get a good picture of your trashed bike after you got hit.

From our local newspaper Berkeleyside. The complete article is here:

bike crash

Did you notice that Berkeley has three "e" in it. That's the way they roll.

Not sure, "on the ground" might have greater reader impact.

I'd guess the Hyundai that struck that bike spun the fork 90 degrees clockwise, bent the quill stem, spun the brake levers on the bar, and taco'd the front wheel.

Meh. I have seen worse. During the local MS ride some poor guy got rear ended while riding on a very wide should of a bridge. The driver, who was a local resident, decided to have a liquid lunch and strayed onto the shoulder. The bike looked far worse than that. Among other things, the saddle had been rotated 180 degrees by the force of the impact. Cyclist lived. Driver fled the scene. At least one driver who witnessed the accident recognized the woman's car. Police went quickly to her home a few miles away and arrested her. She was quite drunk.

Is this what you mean by “on the ground”?

I think it’s pretty dramatic, but was an unpublished police photo, as were these two leaning against the wall; no kickstand:

The story did make the local town paper, with a follow up, and local Metro Boston newscasts.

Yes, specifically two canes or a Rollator (wheeled walker) for walking distances (comfortably) over about a hundred yards or so.

I describe my riding experience similarly, as a cycling lifestyle (of 40 years). I once listed as my credentials: a carbon fiber bike, year-round cycle-commuting, a cross-country tour, and a serious car-bike accident.

Knee walker (400 miles) then trekking poles for me. What a difference a year made.

But I could ride a bike when I could barely walk.

(For those outside of Boston area, I tripped on a brick, but did not fall. In no way comparing what I went through to Jim, but these “jokes?” None of you are ready for stand-up. I mean, there is dark humor, then there’s....)

An older man nearly gets killed by a hit and run, and you think "great opportunity for a kickstand joke"?

Is it really necessary to start a thread every time there's a story somewhere about a car crashing into a bike? What was the point of this thread?

Right now I think he needs an ambulance and not a kickstand.
