Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another wet, dreary day. Strong storms coming tonight. Don't let the vampires bite.

Yesterday's ride was wet. I usually hose off my bike after a wet ride, and an hour or two later, lube the chain. That seems to work out well and I have never seen any rust. But...yesterday I was lazy. I hosed the bike off but let it dry/sit overnight.

I was surprised to see a hue of rust on the inside of the inner plates of my chain this morning. Is that normal??

I am a big fan of the'70s & '80s horror films- particularly in October (AMC's Friday Octoberfest were a favorite when I was still watching cable TV). I rented the most recent installment of this movie a couple of months ago- its actually pretty good. Would rent again, honestly.
I have found my limit, though. I really enjoy Toni Collette's work, so I gave Hereditary a try last April. Holy moly what a good movie but I couldn't sleep at all the night after I watched it, and not properly for weeks afterwards. I felt physically ill immediately after it as well. The director did a great job (particularly since it was his first feature film), but as much as I would like to I can't bring myself to watch his second film.

Anyway, Happy Halloween all. Or just a regular Happy Thursday.

So Anthony Bourdain's bespoke knife, made from meteorite ore and crafted by a very well respected knife maker, went up for auction and finally closed last night.

Well before the end, some knife nerds on the knife nerd site were surprised to see that it had already reached $30k and were frivolously and incredulously comparing it to some of the more expensive hand-crafted knifes available. I chimed in that those were dumb comparisons, that it would sell for much more and that the majority of the value was not in the item, but in the provenance of being made for and owned by Bourdain. Many still didn't get it. The final bidding flurry had it close at $230k+.

Told ya so.

It's not a knife anymore. It's an artifact.

I can't believe they didn't get that. I'm not a watch guy, but I know a Rolex Daytona is nice, and very spendy.... Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona? Way above my pay grade.

Last weekend I noticed a hue of rust when I lubed my chain. Must have developed as a result of the overnight trip. There had been a little drizzle for the last 4 miles or so. Completely forgot to deal with the bike after the drive home.

Thanks for confirming the rust experience, I lubed it and it's gone. It was VERY superficial.

Another item, like shoes, that should be tried on and bought in person....unless you are getting a known brand/model. Even then, they could switch sizes on you.

Today marks the unofficial (but effective) beginning of the holiday season. That feller from Tennessee could never see it, but that’s Tennessee for ya.
I’m a big fan of Halloween and I still haven’t totally figured out why.
