Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. My kids help a bit in this regard, though. Well, they don't help, but their aging does - a 2-yo is very different from a 4-yo, so that anchors things a bit. But stuff from, oh, the 6 years in the condo in Brooklyn before Colin came along? Pffft - it's all one mental lump. I would suppose that something like changing jobs/careers would be strong demarcations, too.

I'm hand-wringing. I should get thermal tights to go over my bibs rather than get padded thermal bibs, right?

YES.

BTW I have some older bibs/shorts that have some wear spots or holes, but the chamios is fine so these are repurposed under tights in the winter.

Longer than I recall but I suspect you are right.

I wonder if the name of the place is like saying Voldemort in Harry Potter...can't say its name.

Big temp swings coming to us this week. It's supposed to be 90F tomorrow but down to 40ish for Saturday.

I may have to dig out my tights soon.

Well, I expected this answer out of you.

BTW, you'd be proud of our restraint. We (wife and I) had been looking at moving, primarily to accommodate the growing children (currently sharing a room) and their growing loads of crap. After looking at the numbers, and weighing our feelings on the direction of the economy, we decided to play it conservative. We're going to stay put, make some minor renovations, pare down, sacrifice a den/office space (as a bedroom for the boy) and aggressively pay off the house, instead. The excitement of potentially moving was cool, but the immediate relief upon making the decision tells me it was the right thing to do; the prospect of having a small house paid off in 7 years is much more comforting than sprawling out and adding another couple hundred thousand dollars in obligations.

I never had, previously, but I got some thermal bib knickers through the club (pretty reasonably priced) last year and have mixed feelings about them. I do like the convenience of just popping them on. Then again, I like the idea of not buying three sets of thermal bibs to get through a week of riding; with tights, as long as it's not a messy and/or sweaty ride, I'm fine with wearing them more than once between washings (and changing the bibs under, obv).

Now I just need to decide on lightly insulated (prolly good down to the mid-20s for me) or thicker with more insulation and better wind/water resistance (prolly good in to the single digits, possibly subzero). Before, 20° used to be when I'd call it quits. I went out in colder weather than that last year, though...

92 here tomorrow. 60s by the weekend. Hoping it stays warn through next week. I want to take one of my favorite local-ish tours. Port Jervis, NY, through the NJ side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area then continuing down the Delaware River and then home. Nice three days of riding, with a great campground along the river the first night. Saw a bear cub there last year.

Problem is that it can get quite cold at night even this early. I am talking close to freezing temps.

We had sweater weather (which I love) for most of the last couple weeks. Yesterday, a warm air mass moved through and it was 80°+ and muggy. It stormed just before bed and now we're back to sweater weather. I assume it's the same system moving in on you.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to search hard for my thermal underwear or buy a new pair quickly. I may need them next week.

In any event, I am not a big fan of layers below the waste.

I'll be adding a thermal skinsuit to my winter riding wardrobe. Our shop changed names, so the perfectly good, warm, skinsuit will become a base layer for winter rides.

There is a spot on BF that will do as you wish. It's called Trollheim.

If you must ask, **** was turned into what it is because certain members would jump right in with that, sometimes as early as the next post after the original. It's a bull**** troll post, and the reports were getting tiresome.

Any other questions?

Thanks for the reply. Can I reference that "other site" that is long dead by name yet?

As you probably know, agreement on those choices is a big positive prognostic factor for a marriage. It's also the financial right answer and you won't regret it.

Re: tights....not that you should do what I do, but here is what I use:

1. Cheapo "runner's" tights from scam-bay which go over my bibs, perfect for temps 40-60.
2. Thicker thermal tights from Performance which have a thin windproof coating, which are ideal for temps 25-40.
3. If under 25, I wear the thin runner's tights UNDER the thermal tights. That has me covered down to 10F which is as cold as it ever gets around here.

I don't see why not, since the site is gone. Social Cyclist actually had a huge following, especially for a new site. It was different, yet the same, if that makes sense. One banned member from here, threw that straight in the trash. When Tom was on there, he appreciated it because he could be himself, and not "admin". This certain member stated how displeased he was with BF, and how unfairly he thought he was treated, in a terrible way. He went way over the top on Tom. (I thought) Activity dropped quickly, after that.
