Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lovely ride through the Uptown neighborhoods Liz and I used to live in yesterday. It was quite nice going down Mission Hills/Presidio, one of San Diego's premiere neighborhoods. I miss riding through there. Lots of historic adobe houses (with the big brass stamp), very well taken care of lots, views of the bay, tight intra-neighborhood canyons and Christmas decor abounds. High rent district for sure.

This one house had tall white adobe walls with forest green trim on the roof and other sight lines. In the large tree in their front yard, they had dangled a bunch of large red ornaments. Very tastefully done, very aesthetically pleasing. I wanted to take a photo but I felt like a creep.

I miss getting to ride through there! Now I have to ride through Linda Vista and try to dodge broken glass and homelelss people on my way to our neighborhood (Clairemont/Kearney Mesa), but hey it beats renting.

That and making sure he's using good yeast that's still kicking, and letting it sit in warm water prior to adding the ingredients... All as per basic instruction.

Reading the recipe through at least once prior to prep, is the best advice I can hand out.

Things remain tenuous with my knee, def. some low grade inflammation in there. gonna test the waters with a few efforts today, and if I'm not feeling confident, cancel my plans for a long ride into the mountains tomorrow morning. damn. this may take 2 or 3 weeks of easy to calm things down.

Then on the 9th, I'm going under the knife to repair an inguinal hernia. Fun stuff. Mostly asymptomatic, but my understanding is that these things are like holes in the drywall and are not going to get better. Fortunately I may be eligible for a laparoscopic procedure (TAP), which should cut down recovery vs slicing me all the way open.

But I'm sure the doc will want at least a couple of weeks before I put in anything remotely close to a workout. Gonna be hard to build fitness back with such limited volume. I may need to beg/plead my wife for some allowance for long z2 rides and to be a very good boy when I'm not at work.

Safe to say I will not be breaking any fitness barriers in 2024 haha.

You have a lot in the bank, but that 3% that you need to set you apart will be missed for a wee bit.

I hope the recovery goes well.

Mrs BD is working on one with ginger snap crust as we speak. The topping is unknown atm, details at 11.

Thanks for the kind words. That last 3" is the hard part, as you know I'm sure. I've found that with time off from injury/illness/whatever, two month gets me 95% of the way back. The last bit is the hard part.

Nope. I want to take that one around the neighborhood first before I go on a longer ride, and it’s too clean and fresh to take on a wet ride.

Ive had laparoscopic and arthroscopic procedures. The small incisions are great, but don’t fool yourself it’s still surgery. Don’t rush the recovery.

well, my knee felt 100% fine during some test efforts in Watopia. Grabbed Titan's with a 4:19 and then like 10th on FF reverse with a 9:39... lots of times near my PR. I wonder if there was a race coming through.

If I don't develop any undue inflammation for the rest of the day AND if my knee feels good tomorrow, I'll head our into the hills. Up next: ibuprofen, foam rolling, stretching.
