Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Really? Posting photos of your stuff and asking for validation from strangers is more "adult" than shooting the breeze about stuff that you want? To me, that sounds a lot like taking selfies for IG, hoping to get likes/approval/validation. Very strange. But cool. You do what makes you feel all adult and stuff. I have the mental maturity of a 15 year old anyway, so wtf do i know about such things.

I, for one, am trying hard to hold onto youthful cognitive traits, such as imagination, creativity and flexibility. If some lust for machines (and other, you know, “objects”) sticks to that, at least I have the maturity and experience to understand where real happiness lies.

One of those French racing tris set a record across the Atlantic a few years ago. They crossed from NY to the English Channel in 3 1/2 days or there abouts. Their best days run was over 900 miles in 24 hours - faster than a cruise liner. As an engineering proposition those boats are extremely interesting and I want one.

I lust after boats I could actually see myself owning, racing, and cruising.

I’m with you. My brother still owns and races (small mono hull 30ft). He gets decent use but I’m still amazed at the usage statistics of people who own boats and how I frequently they’re used, not to mention the cost of upkeep, Moorage if applicable, etc

Very cool. Hey, do you know the torque spec for my keel bolts?

I don't know the torque specs you need butI you could come up with a number based on the dia. of the bolts. 316 SS has a breaking strength of 60,000 lbs. So you could torque the bolts to about half that. If the bolts are one inch in dia. the area is .78 sq. inches times 60,000 lbs = 46,000 pounds. Or you could e-mail Dufour.

OP, Interesting perspective but a paint job is only superficial. Underlying material is what either makes or breaks a ride. I prefer steel though, so have at it.

Great answer and sorry, I was actually kidding. I do need to find the number, now that a buddy of mine has bought a huge torque wrench for his 5-ton truck, but I will go through channels.

If we are talking bikes, Neo Retro is what I lust for. Some examples from various FB groups.

OP, I vote that you upgrade your Lynskey instead. Although that Orbea is a sweet bike, carbon bikes are starting to look all the same...with different paint jobs.

Hi Glenn - I see you own the EMonda - have you had any issues with it? I have my race bikes sorted (Shiv and Venge) and am looking for a bike for more fun riding. Am torn whether to go with performance (EMonda, R5) or just something funky (the Orbea RetinaBurner above, or an Oltre XR4).

If I go with the former, the Emonda is on top of my list. How is the ride quality - does it feel planted, stiff, non-flexy and fun/fast to ride? Any insights you can share from owning it? TIA.

Damn, those are some lovely bikes there. I was at a bike shop in KL called Bike Artisans last week, and they had a sub-7kg custom Pegerotti that just blew my mind.

Agreed about underlying material making/breaking the ride. And unfortunately, that is the reason I am not so excited about the Lynskey. I have a custom steel gravel bike in my other home as well. It's nice, it's smooth, it's great for riding on rough roads and is my training bike when i am there - but neither this nor the Lynskey really make the act of riding enjoyable. The Venge does. The Shiv does. I have realized that carbon is what i enjoy riding the most - and that too, stiff/responsive carbon (not the plush, comfortable kind).

So the bike i want right now isnt something i need for training or racing - just a fun bike that puts a smile on my face to ride. Not a training bike, not a racing bike, but a "go out there and enjoy time on the saddle" bike. Something which, for a bunch of personal reasons, I do need. And since all my bikes are some combo of black/red/white/polished, this bike has to not only ride well, but be clearly a "ride for the sake of riding".

Around here, the NE, people put their boats up for the winter but some continue to race in dinghys in the "frost bite" fleet as long as there is no ice in the harbor. Then, in late afternoon they retire to the yacht club bar to relive clever and devious exploits on the race course. The yacht club bar, there lies the real expense of owning a boat.
