Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My riding partner is some kind of Fred?

Hey 41. Occasionally I go out for a relaxed roll around with a friend of mine. It's a social thing really, we keep a real slow pace because we have a couple friends who tag along on beater bikes and aren't very strong on the bike. This is all well and good so far, if I want to big ring it I have other rides to go on.

The problem is, someone will invariably overtake us because our pace is pretty awful. I don't mind this, until my friend sprints off after them like a dog chasing a car. I could forgive this if he didn't invariably end up stealth drafting them for miles, while everyone else in the group just chills at our granny pace. A couple times I have bridged the gap and then blown past them, to try and demonstrate that if you are going to chase a complete stranger, ****ing overtake them and leave them behind. Still my friend can be found sucking some 250lb mountain biker's wheel from time to time. He does this on MUPs for christ sake. It's the worst when he says after "Man, I just love racing other bikers." *cringe*

Do I directly confront him? Do I just stop riding with him? Brake check?

Thanks guys.

Is this here in the states? If it this, then, last time I checked there was no laws against that. Other parts of the world, well, that is a whole other ball game. You may be able to cut his legs or something for such atrocity.

Do you ever ride in his car? Does he tailgate? Personally i think drafting a complete stranger is both very rude and dangerous. If I go to a group ride I expect to be drafted as well as draft and have bikes in close proximity. Being out solo the idea of someone drafting is annoying because now I am in a dangerous scituation I did not agree to.

you should chat with hima nd see if perhaps he is yearning for a faster pace.

Three options come to mind:
  1. Carry a load of junk and look as Fredly as possible so you'll at least blend in a little better
  2. Try to get him on open road. Go easy on him -- if you totally smoke him, he'll just get depressed and quit riding
  3. Cry

Personally, I think you should try all three.

Next time, tell him the other dude wasn't racing: there's no finish line, no prize, and no numbers. If he wants to race, offer to take him to the local crit. You could even pay for it. Or maybe just race you next time.

If someone did that to me for just a bit, I'd kindly tell them to "**** off" as I sprint away.....if it's for miles and miles I'd probably do a light brake check.

He'd invariably be indignant, not realizing he's in the wrong...but hell, explaining the obvious idiocy combined with the fright of unexpected wheel/tire contact might just straighten him out.

To be honest this is a Fredilicious sport. I get this from fellow 'riders' all the time. They talk all kinds of smack, I have even had guys say they beat me in a sprint, on a 25 mile training ride. C'mon now...

I have had guys talk smack and say they could drop me in a race blah, blah, blah I tell the 5 to give me a ring when their license has a 1 on it.

I think your buddy is just having fun, annoying as it may seem he sounds a little spirited and that is ok.

I agree. If I'm out on a solo ride and someone passes me, sometimes I'll try to keep up, even for just short time. I didn't realize it was wrong.

If I want to ride slow with a group of friends, I would insist on keeping the group together. Just reverse drop your pal and maybe stop inviting him?
