Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New to Riding in Queens NY

Any of yous guys (couldn't resist) live out here in Queens NY, the Jackson Heights area specifically? It's my first night out here and I have no clue where to ride. I'm going to school in the city and just moved here. I know the city fairly well, but in terms of biking here I have no clue. Also, I need to join a New York club, any suggestions? I like a little competition, but also the occasional long friendly ride, but mainly I liking going fast.

Hopefully you have access to a car to get to the lot.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at things) I don't have a car. So getting out there means I'd hve to ride out.

Try nycc.org. They're a nice bunch and based mostly in Manhattan. Their rides mostly leave from Central Park and go north, either in NJ or Westchester. At this point in the year though the number of rides is dropping.

five boro bicycle club - www.5bbc.org
don't even need to be a member for many of their rides
some start out in queens, but you can always take the subway to most locations
I'd say their riding style is less intense than nycc, but you'll learn your way around with them.
