Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shoulder !!!!!!!!!!!

Well.....thought I would jump on the rollers to warm up and at least do some spinning. Sure enough I had a fall and dislocated my shoulder. So now my training is in the toilet. No real reason to post this other than to just vent and relieve some frustration. I will go see the doctor tomorrow and see what the extent of the damage is. Not going to be so easy to recover from this at 58 yrs. old. But slow and easy and hope to avoid surgery cause that will ruin any races this year. Anyway thanks for listening.

If your training is in the toilet, mine has gone down the drain and is approaching the lump shredder in the sewage treatment plant. I hit a dog Nov 8 and broke a bunch of ribs, collarbone, shoulder blade and punctured a lung. I'm 63 and still off the bike.

Count your blessings, there are no guarantees in life. I consider myself lucky, I'll be riding again before long. Hope the same for you.

If you dislocated your shoulder, wouldn't you have already seen the Dr? In fact, wouldn't you have gone to Emergency as soon as possible?

I empathize.

I am two weeks post-op on arthroscopic shoulder repair. My doc says I'm off the bike until AT LEAST march 1st.

The dislocation that caused the tear in my shoulder happened on Sept 14th. That was when my riding really started to be curtailed. By the end of October it was just too painful to ride anymore. So, yeah its a total of 5-6 months off the bike.

Like I said, I feel ya.

Most dislocated shoulders spontaneously reduce or "pop back in," so there's not much to do in an emergency room. There usually is some ligament/tendon/etc that gets injured and needs to be rested/strengthened/etc.

I've dislocated both my shoulders a couple of times, from running falls, and bike falls, and just falling over falls... My shoulders are pretty loosey-goosey at this point. My last dislocation I got just by swatting at a bee that landed on my neck... nice story for the folks in the ER.

Don't give up on your training totally. With your doctor's approval, you should still be able to use an elliptical trainer (holding on to the stationary grips, not the "ski poles"), stair stepper, treadmill (walk or jog, don't run for now), or use a stationary bicycle or recumbent. Keep active, do a lot of walking, climb stairs, etc. Bodyweight squats and lunges are also possiblities (you might want to do these at a railing or other means of aiding your balance with your good arm) as are leg exercise machines at the gym. Check with a sports oriented physical therapist to get even more suggestions for keeping your legs and core strong while your shoulder heals.

Watch your nutrition and adjust calories if your activity level is decreased.

Here's hoping the damage is minor and will heal quickly and well. Good luck, take care.

You can greatly reduce the risk of this sort of thing by riding them with platform pedals. Unfortunately that will change your pedal stroke a bit especially at high cadence.

Are you sure it's a dislocation and not a separation? I happen to know you can ride with the latter.

byte_speed, thanks for your encouragement and sorry for your accident. My Orthopedic says PT and be gentle with it and I should be back to normal in time. No surgery required to date.

Machka, you have a good point here but I live about 30 min away from the hospital. I knew it was dislocation cause I could see the Humerus on the outside towards the back and out of where the shoulder should be. Don't know if this makes sense. I knew that what damage had occurred would be minimized with quick relocation. So I grabbed a pole and yanked on my arm to extend the joint and let it relocate. After X-rays looks like it was a good relocation and I am feeling much better and hoping for rapid healing. Seems that the sooner you can relocate the joint the less damage and heal faster. Hoping to be on the bike again in a few weeks. but my scheduled race is "Kaput". Now looking for something else to set my goals.

Risk assessment is the key. I am over 50 and every time I ride I ask myself what could go wrong. I select a speed according to probability and consequences of an accident. That doesn't mean life is wonderful though, because back pain has restricted my riding for a while.

I'm just curious though. I don't live too far from you (I17/carefree hwy). We've had great weather this winter. Why were you on the rollers?
