Using multiple GPS tracking apps simultaneously
I don't have an app for my phone to track my rides and don't know if I'll ever get one but with all the threads I've seen about them and which ones are best I was wondering if anyone has tried using more than 1 at a time? Is that even doable?
Just curious.

I've got Strava and Cyclemeter. I've used Strava for a year, and like the social aspect. I got Cyclemeter about a month ago just to check it out, and it's pretty neat. I like the mile by mile splits. Since I got Cyclemeter, I normally do run both apps on a ride. This seems to drain my iPhone battery faster, but they both work.

Yes its doable. I do it on every ride. Endomondo and Strava. Endomondo is my favorite app by far. Audio feedback for every mile, and comparisons against previous workouts and personal bests is awesome. Strava is great for riding against other peoples segments and seems to be a little more accurate in terms of elevation for determining inclines etc...
I turn the music on (use 1 earpiece), start Strava, and then Endomondo, and Im off.

Which app give the best data tracking. I want to see MTD, YTD and lifetime mileage and climbing. Haven't found that too easily on either MMR or Strava.
And yes, I have run both MMR and Strava simultaneously with no problem. I did not notice any additional battery drain when I added Strava.

For an hour and a half with music, and 2 gps apps. My phone used up 12% of the battery. That's pretty good.

Most of the battery is used by the screen. After that, the GPS receiver, then the apps themselves. Android has a few apps that track battery usage, I assume the iPhone does as well.
However, there aren't many reasons to use more than one at a time as a test. All the apps should receive the same GPS data, so the real difference is in the interface and options. Do a few rides with the different ones, and see what you like.
I prefer a dedicated GPS unit though.

I just discovered the Wahoo Fitness app for my iPhone. This app tracks your cadence, heart rate, speed, elevation, etc. and at the end of my ride, the app allows me to upload my Wahoo data directly to Strava and MapMyRide. I was running both Strava and MapMyRide at the same time on my rides for awhile, but also shared your concern that it wore my battery down faster. Wahoo seems to be a great solution....check it out.
