Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So far, a router and router table have shown up. Vertical/horizontal laser level, too. Smoothing plane will arrive in a couple days, as will some parallel clamps. Drill press in about a week. Saw/work station soon thereafter.

Tools are fun.

Actually, that's not true. Two years ago Thanksgiving I did get a first degree murder case. This Sunday after Thanksgiving wasn't quite as bad.

Was it LesterOfPuppets that needed to upgrade his EOL Win7? I saw this article the other day but kept forgetting to post it - https://hothardware.com/news/microso...ws-10-upgrades

Illegal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia?

Which side do you do?

From my clinical training days, I remember the holidays as being a risky time for human life, health, and happiness.

Wow! You prolly got a plunge router. I use a Craftsman from 1980. Good enough for who it's for. Will you also get a trim router? I understand they are very handy, and would spring for one myself, if I did more woodworking. I almost envy you being young enough to enjoy it for a very long time. But not quite. Enjoy!
Edit: My tablesaw is approximately the same age. Also a Craftsman. It will not quit though.

Yes, it was a bundle that came with a plunge base and the bench top table; HomeDepot had a promo that was a $100 less than even Amazon, so I feel like I made out pretty well. No plans for a trim router at this time. Prices on them look pretty reasonable, but I've got other tool wants - while the budget is generous enough, I could easily spend more, so a convenience like that is lower on the list.

In other news, my roommate was an elderly yet pretty spry Italian fellow. He apparently had been suffering from so-called "panic attacks" for decades. What he really needed was a simple ablation. He had one before I was admitted. Before he left last evening a doctor visited him and told him there was less than a 2% chance of his problem returning. She also told him she had no idea why he had not been offered the treatment decades ago instead of being diagnosed with panic attacks. I felt really bad for the guy, but also happy for the success.
Kudos.

Regarding your roommate, I am guessing he had an ablation for SVT*. It’s only been in the past decade or so that the technology has matured enough that this is done frequently. It’s also possible his doctor never captured one of these episodes on a cardiac monitor until recently, to confirm the diagnosis.

Are you allowed to ride?

edit: SVT = supraventricular tachycardia

new tool days are as much fun as new bike days. I’ve taken over the garage slowly but surely over the years and would like to add a nice table saw, but can do without.

Did you go for a hand plane or a power planer/jointer? A nice smoothing (hand) plane can/does cost as much as a power one these days, but the satisfaction of slicing a nice long shaving of wood is quite the thing.

:sigh: I can’t seem to create enough wood dust nowadays.

I'd love to use only hand tools, and I've tried to do just that in the past, but **** just takes forever, so I'm taking a hybrid approach going forward.

I have a 13" planer already and a decent assortment of hand planes (with another smoothing plane on the way). No table saw - I don't have the room or desire at this point - so I'm going with a glorified track saw, a full Kreg ACS. That should give me the repeatability to knock out cabinets and drawers.

Once I get the shop in order and have a handle the kitchen work, I hope to start on some more interesting, fun projects.

The thickness planer is my favorite tool. My small shop also has a jointer and table saw. Besides those, my next favorite tool is a block plane.I also very much like the doguchi saw.

yeah, what I generally do (building electric guitars) can all be done with hand tools as well, but having well setup power tools makes it so much faster. A decent router and router table makes shaping the body cavities a 15-20 minute job, but for some of the body shaping going at it with a Shinto rasp And scrapers is the way to go for me.

My favorites are the planer and the jointer, but I really wouldn’t mind building my own drum sander and having nice dependable bending equipment so I can also start building acoustics, but now that I’m back in corporate system, don’t have the time anymore

My father was the Chief of Public Defenders in Philly before going into private criminal practice. (He hated being an administrator. Loved going to court.) He told me business always picked up around the holidays. One week before Christmas of 2010 someone broke into my house while my GF and I were in bed watching the 11 p.m. news. The person stole my custom touring racks along with the Surly LHT they were attached to. Also got my flip phone.

Wow, ballsy!

Public defender is up there with teaching in the public schools at the top of my hierarchy of socially heroic jobs.

Came in to work. Plan is to do this a.m.'s meetings from my computer, avoid close contact with humans and stay out of patient care areas, Try not to cough while interviewing a residency candidate, and leave before the 2-hr institute award ceremony I was supposed to go to.
