One coworker is nearly my age and pretty fit from jogging, and only lives five miles from job. I've been working on him for years to get a bike, but his take is that as a youth in Viet Nam, every one had to get around on bikes. Now that he doesn't have to, he won't.

I'm a programmer and system manager dealing mainly with electronic filing of tax returns. There's about an 8% chance that if you efile in the US, it comes through my code. I wrote the whole system top to bottom. I have a bachelor's degree in CS from Michigan Tech and my income is about triple the average household income in the state.
I have no points on my license (never have had any), I could easily afford to go out and buy a luxury car and feed it well, I just don't particularly give a damn about cars; I drive a 12 year old rusty minivan and don't really have any urge to replace it. I'm riding because of environmental, health and entertainment reasons (I figure I'm at least offsetting one idiot on the road driving a Hummer on well paved roads, I am healthier at 50 and riding than I was at 25 and not, and I have a lot of fun riding).

I'm an environmental engineer working for a state agency. As a bike commuter, I thank my lucky stars that we have a small pool of vehicles, and I can sign one out if I need to conduct field work or go to offsite meetings. (Although occasionally all of them are taken). Otherwise, I would need to drive my own car at least one, and sometimes two, days per week.
Given the environmental focus of my work, you would think there would be a few other regular bike commuters in my workplace. Not really the case (there are 2 or 3 people who will ride in once in a while, but only in nice weather).

Wastewater Treatment Plant
A mere 17 miles from our rural home...in the Capitol City of the Great State of Wisconsin. There are 14 other bike commuters on our staff of 90. We collect and treat an average of 40 million gallons of wastewater per day from our 185 sq mile metropolitan service area. I am a GIS specialist and maintain our Geographic Information System and also support coworkers with graphics, printing, GPS, and surveying type work. I started bike commuting in 2010 when one of our vehicles (1998 Toyota 4runner) blew a head gasket. I began by biking to catch a coworkers carpool in a town about 5 miles from home and soon realized it would not take me much longer to ride all the way in to work. I started doing just that and haven't looked back. I struggle with the Winter layoff but this year I am doing some air-dyne riding to try to keep a minimal level of conditioning. I find it very interesting to see all the different "reasons" for bike commuting represented in this thread.

Mostly. Massachusetts is still legacy for 1040 as is one 1041 system. Business filing has been MeF for years now with a couple of stubborn holdouts. The mandatory FBAR filing with Treasury and a few other oddballs like the 8955 are my current pain in the rump.

I have one client with Massachusetts' income. That couple had income in five states... talk about a pain in the rump! At least I get to charge accordingly.

My employer (Fortune 500 company) encourages cycling and provides bike commuter amenities.
Many of the bike commuters have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree, many have MS or MBA, and are salaried engineers, finance, project mgmt, software dev, senior management. Most are over age 45 and make decent salaries.
There seems to be less interest in commuting expressed by the factory hourly (union) workers.
I would say the opposite holds true. The bike commuters tend to be more educated.
It could be that the salaried people aren't punching a timeclock getting docked if they are late to work.
Or the salaried people are sitting at a desk all day instead of doing physical labor that the factory guys might do.

Some college, a lot of Army, and some police experience. Right now, I work security at a boutique hotel in DC. If you have to ask how much it costs, they'll help you arrange a loan. I do however have a great boss, wonderfully nice coworkers, and a furry dog like object they pretend is a greeter.
Misconceptions abound as far as bicycling goes, I was a bike cop when I was policing. On two occasions I had complainants who insisted on speaking with an officer with a drivers license rather than give me their report. Apparently, they believed officers who drove patrol cars had more training then I did.

Never have, probably never will. Just the way I was brought up.
When I'm on the taxpayer dime, I work for the taxpayers.
By the same token, when I'm off the clock, I'm off the clock.
Besides, I have much a much nicer setup at home. I didn't have to buy from the lowest bidder.

I am a structural designer for a small consulting engineering company. We work in the power industry, specialty chemicals, mining, cement and semiconductor industry. So I get a wide variety of projects.

Yes. I work on average 9 hours a day, sometimes as many as 12, and I don't get paid overtime. Nobody keeps track of when I show up and leave. I work from home on the weekends sometimes, none of it reported. As long as my stuff gets done and I'm not watching porn at my desk, nobody cares. 10 minutes of browsing downtime every few hours, usually while some task is completing on the computer, is not a problem.

I teach first grade. I park my bike in the classroom. The kids seldom mess with it, but ask many questions about it:
Why are your tires so skinny? (I run 32mm's)
Why do you have two water bottles?
Do you have a car? Do you know how to drive? Do you have a license? (All asked by the same kid. The sequence is perfect first grader logic.)
Why is my name on your wheel? (asked by Alex)
Why is my name on your seat? But my name has an e and the seat has an s instead. (asked by Brooke)
Why is my name on your handlebar? Why did they spell it wrong? (asked by Richy)

Very interesting thread.
I work as a technical advisor at a Ford dealer, I'm a former car mechanic but was not very good at it so that's why I became a technical advisor. Many of my Customers find it amusing that a guy who have worked in the car industry for the last 21 years try to drive is own car the less he can.
