Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was thinking about the velocity of one line zingers in this thread last night, and was thinking of the best way to describe the Addiction thread to my wife.

I called it quip pro quo.

Honestly, I didn't recall ls01 having the one line zingers. Who knew he was funny?

But the sister who was born in 1955 VEHEMENTLY denies being a Joneser (though she has a tendency to histrionic vehemence).

But the differences pointed out in that article are very much true of my family. My older brothers were draft age during Vietnam (one was able to get C.O. status, the other had medical issues), and my two oldest sisters both had husbands who got drafted. They also remembered the pre-TV era with radios, etc. The brothers were both members of SDS, protested the war, etc. The oldest brother went to Mississippi for Freedom Summer.

Me? I am one of those guys who never even had to register. The war ended while I was still 17. We always had a TV. Both Kennedys, Malcolm X, and MLK had all been assassinated while I was in grade school. The first Presidential election I remember was Nixon's first, and Watergate happened while I was in high school. I started my career during the recession of 1982.

So, very different experiences!
Yeah, it's like elder Millennials remembering pre-9/11 clearly, having used pre-internet computers (or just no computers), and a few other things that are given as reasons.

Eventually we can just name each birth year.

Seems there was a fair amount of concern about the misunderstanding around these parts this morning. No need for concern, we’ve all witnessed dust ups in this thread before. No big deal, eventually the dust will settle, if it hasn’t already, and parties involved will work things out in private all nicey-nicey as usual.

Meanwhile, lunch break is over, back to my subfloor project. Mrs BD will most likely expect some progress when she arrives back home this evening.

In other news: Go Cowboys!!

I fractured a finger in three spots between knuckles, and the offending part was dirty and greasy that did it. There was a lot going on in that little space, but three things from that stick with me. They put a cuff on to stop the bleeding and deaden the pain, so the pins and needles of the circulation returning, was not at all good. The sound of them scraping stuff off the bone and whatever else was going on, I'll never forget. The surgery was a few days later for the pinning and such, and thankfully they put me out. When I woke up and the anesthesia wore off, was pain I've never felt before or since.

I would hope that has changed, but I suspect not.
Being in upbeat specialties where they effect dramatic cures and not having to follow patients for chronic conditions or otherwise long-term, they are somewhat squeamish about suffering in general.

I think my biggest pain, honestly, was my QL going out. My kidney stones I didn't feel, though the procedure to get them blasted apart was rough.

The hip wasn't so bad in the moment. The surgery was miserable, and the recovery, but I was heavily numbed. That might be the difference.

When I crashed the first new madone, that road rash was pretty gnarley. I rode again that night so the pain must have not been greater than the addiction.

I have been finned multiple times surfing. Sliced me right to the bone, skin flapping all over the place.

Worst surfing accident getting thrown from my board but still landing on it while it was on its side. My leg went into the board. Cut me up real nice. Wife was there for that one, she thought I was going to die. I was pissed my board was broken, and more pissed it was the first wave.

I sold all boards for my bike stuff this summer.

Ive done a lot of stupid ****. I know hard to imagine.

I guess I have been lucky so far.

"Crushing my thumb" is a bit overstatement, but what I remember is that they couldn't stopped the ripped off nail bed from bleeding. They went to essentially cauterizing, and I remember the sound of the zaps and the smell of my thumb cooking.

The Vegan Cyclist did a Fat Bike race in Wisconsin, where he got frostbite on his Johnson. He was filming the whole time after he finished the race, and the agony of reperfusion was really, really bad.

He commented a couple times that he'd talked to a bunch of folks about Fat Bike racing, and NOT ONE mentioned this as a possibility. But after it happened, everyone he talked to said, "Yeah, that happens." "Might have been nice to tell me!" he complained.

Having had a couple minor procedures under local anesthesia, I gotta say it is really strange to watch, and hear, and even feel slightly when someone, for example, takes a slice out of the skin on your leg, then sews it up, with the needle CLEARLY going through your skin.

When my Dad was 96, he underwent a second knee replacement*. Since he was so old, they didn't go a general, but rather a spinal block. I imagine it was distinctly strange, hearing them sawing and hammering at his leg, maybe feeling tugging on it, but not feeling the actual operation.

* Yeah, 96 is real damn old to be doing that. My sister was VERY skeptical, but the doc. pointed out that with Dad's worsening dementia, he was likely to try and stand on the bad one and have it collapse under him, possibly breaking a hip or worse.

I have broken a lot of bones and have had a lot of stitches and have passed kidney stones but really two things for me stick out and the first was by the worst....like I still curl up in a little ball and whimper when I think of it.
1. had a hole ripped in my sinus
2. being tazed...
