Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I looked it up on PubMed, and damned if he wasn't right! Plus there were a couple articles on the wires and such they used to tie the ends together getting loose in the body.

He asked me if I was in a throwing sport. "Cycling isn't generally considered a throwing sport," I replied.

The next year, defending TdF champ Bjarne Riis famously threw his TT bike when the chain came off.
The doc told me I didn't need to do it and lots of people lived with the separation. I really didn't like the feeling of my shoulder being disconnected so I went for it. I was working for the school district and had good insurance. I was happy with the outcome after about a year. I gained 35 pounds in 6 months after the surgery.

A friend had the Rayon cord thing after a rugby injury. He showed me how the cord was sawing through the collar bone. My doctor had warned me about that fix.

I've had that from a sinus "squeeze" when descending without adequate equalization on a dive. My mask filled with bloody snot on the way up. LSS takes prophylactic vasoconstrictors on flights to avoid it.

I have no stories of gruesome, painful incidents in my life to share. I would prefer if the rest of you accident prone bastids would stop.

Ugh!
Yeah sinus squeeze not separation, that’s what I had. Not pleasant.

When asked about the hip replacement, all she would say is that it was noisy, smelled like stuff burning and there was a lot of hammering.
Your mom sounds tough!

That's about what I remember from the one hip replacement I watched as a student and the stuff burning is bone. Then you're treated to an overwhelming smell of some volatile organic solvent when they mix up the cement. Probably took years off my liver.

Another intense pain was the lidocaine shot for my vasectomy. It was mercifully only for about 3 seconds, then all went numb.
the only pain I had with my vasectomy was the dr told me there was a medical class there that day and she asked if I minded if they observed...I freaking thought it was a class of medical students..so I said sure. turns out it was some pre nursing students and I think they might have been mostly 18-19 year female students....I am sure some swore off sex after that exposure....i was just thankful I did not recognize any of them from my daughter's class......

I realize this is a huge can of worms on multiple levels, which I'm not necessarily trying to open, but I'm just shocked at how much they gave me.

Most of it will sit in the medicine cabinet and stay there until it's expired. I remember one time a few years ago, I got stung by a stingray at the beach. Man that sucks. It's like a full intensity bee sting, but for more than a few hours. I had some leftover Vicodin from a dental procedure that came in handy that evening.
I recently read a book on the in’s and outs of the epidemic. The producer picked out specific counties in specific states to target. And then they made it cost effective for the doctors to prescribe it. Etc.

But the sister who was born in 1955 VEHEMENTLY denies being a Joneser (though she has a tendency to histrionic vehemence).

But the differences pointed out in that article are very much true of my family. My older brothers were draft age during Vietnam (one was able to get C.O. status, the other had medical issues), and my two oldest sisters both had husbands who got drafted. They also remembered the pre-TV era with radios, etc. The brothers were both members of SDS, protested the war, etc. The oldest brother went to Mississippi for Freedom Summer.

Me? I am one of those guys who never even had to register. The war ended while I was still 17. We always had a TV. Both Kennedys, Malcolm X, and MLK had all been assassinated while I was in grade school. The first Presidential election I remember was Nixon's first, and Watergate happened while I was in high school. I started my career during the recession of 1982.

So, very different experiences!
Could I be GenJones? I’ll have to look into it
