Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

unfortunately it was 8+ weeks until the stone passed … and had two separate bouts with excruciating pain during the last two weeks

I do stay fairly hydrated on the bike - sorta / kinda - typically around 22 ounces per 10 miles - but fall short other times … I’m carrying too much weight (gentle way of stating I’m fat ) - lost 30 or so lbs in the past two years - but still sweat profusely and need to increase the water intake

plus - apparently a recent diet / nutrition change could also be a contributing factor …(?) … increase in leafy green vegs / salads, berries, nuts, calcium … I saved the expelled kidney stone so it could be analyzed - but have not submitted it (yet)
22 oz in ten miles? I don’t think I could manage that. I tend toward pre-hydration, and drink much less.while riding. But I will look into it. Kidney stones appear to be something to be avoided if possible.

I have not. Another option is Brompton. Read this now and thank me later:

I never rode one but there used to be a couple who rode them on our club rides. They would do the long-ish climbing rides with us and did fine. Not as fast in some situations as a road bike but faster than I thought they would be. Supposed to be able to duplicate your road bike position on them.

There is a cyclist who rode with our club about 10 years ago, but then moved to DC. I still follow her on Strava. She has done some epic rides, and just posted this climb up Las Letras in Colombia (I believe it’s the longest climb in the world). It’s certainly on my bucket list.

Never pulled the trigger, but researched them heavily. I ultimately went with the coupled bike. For monetary reasons. I wasn’t prepared to spend $2000 on a bike. Plus all the ads ons are proprietary. You don’t seem to have that sort of shyness, so it would likely work out well for you.

I hadn't heard anything about Pcad, but that sounds like bad news.

I used to chat with Robert (Rpenmanparker) a bunch, but I think he and Heathpack both were scarcer by the time I moved.

He was killed by a motor vehicle while biking near his neighborhood. The entire forum, past and present, grieved. Two or three years ago.

We had some new legislation that resulted in our taxes going down over 30% this year. Not to $15 though.

should have qualified that - 22 oz per 10 miles on a summer / relatively hot day ride

example - 35-40 mile ride (bike / ride pictured above) - early August 84 degrees humid (rode through two brief drizzles)

carried two 22 oz bottles - emptied the bottles just after the midway point - filled them (convenience store in a little town) and emptied the bottles just before end of ride … 88 oz

and drank maybe 4 - 6 oz or so on the drive to the beginning of the ride … and maybe 4 - 8 oz on the drive home

In the summertime I like to drink a liter before starting out. On a ride longer than my normal 22 miles, I will stop and buy(and drink on the spot) another half liter when the opportunity presents itself.
Looks like a lovely ride
